It's Christmas today ! I came into some cash finally and decided to treat myself to a plasma cutter :D I can't wait to tear into that bad boy tomorrow.
Got one of those nifty little Hypertherm Powermax 30 lightweight jobs.
I've got one of those Hypermax cowl induction setups coming in tomorrow this will make for a nice little cut in, then on to some turbo style bumper cut outs , and some fog light cut outs, and.....:D

Isn't that the truth :rotflmao Hey anything is better than what my cuts look like with a torch

They had one of those big manufacturer days there a few months back and I just fell in love with that plasma cutter  .I couldn't believe how clean I could cut, even free hand. The guy let me play with it a while ( end of the day and things were winding down ), I found if I could get in low in front of it I could eyeball the line and be good to go ;Sweet

it's amazing how good you can be at the demo table.
now try that when you are cutting a truck in two.
here's a pic with Tanker Tom after one of those parties:D
we're playing with a Cutmaster38. It's a dual voltage monster that good up to 1/2" steel. It still suck on thick aluminum.

That's sweet! Comes apart nice and neat. That little one I got is suppose to give a clean cut to 3/8 severence to 1/2 steel . I didn't want a bigger unit, I just wanted a nice easy to handle thing that I could manuver without having to put it on wheels, this thing isn't much bigger than a shoebox, dual voltage so I can use it off the 120 volt for most everything.

I hear everyone complain about the way those things cut aluminum, but he one I fooled with did a decent job of it, and besides, it went right along with my welds on aluminum :rotflmao

I got to use it today to cut out some notches in the rear bumper and last crossmember on my 5er so I could slip a hitch receiver bar in there to weld it in. What a joy :D cut in straight as an arrow upside down, and poked in backwards shoved up in a hole, man, it doesn't get much better than this

My Hypermax cowl induction kit came in the big brown truck today so I got to use my handy dandy plasma cutter to pop a hole in the firewall there instead of having to peck away at it with a cutoff wheel it took a grand total of about a minute and a nice clean hole.
My skill time with this type tool consists of a handful of cuts today and that playtime on demo day I spoke of, so these things are silly simple to master.
The only downside is cost  I got a baby unit and it cost me around $1200

So what is the big advantage of a plasma cutter over a torch? Lower heat and less proximity risk I'm guessing. I love my torch, but I can see where it would be convienent not to have to worry about setting stuff on fire. LOL

it can cut a way finer line and its allot easer to handle, do need to light it, its off as soon as you let go of the trigger, and way cheaper to run

mel-
like you said, the heat is more concerntrated. The firewall hole is a poor example on how clean a plasma can cut. That hole is common with a operator having a turrets fit while lighting up his arc. if a guide was used to steady the torch, the cut would have looked like you took a pair metal shears to the firewall.
