Reading this brings back memories why I closed off my shop to servicing the general public. I am in a area where men are too much of a ***** to change a flat tire, yet when their car is in the shop and they get hit with a whopper of an estimate, they suddenly become auto repair "experts".

I had a cure for that B.S. when I was wrenching on other peoples stuff.


I tell them up front before I start that .......

1. It will be done right or I won't do it.
2. It get's done my way, not your way
3. Parts are paid for before they are purchased
4. Labor is paid for before they get it back
5. You will get a call if I find something more serious than originally planned for before any more work is done.
6. If you don't like what I tell you needs to be done and won't finish the repairs properly I will pack everything in your trunk and you can tow the car off my property when you pay me for work already completed.......Yes I have done this, my favorite was a Jaguar that needed the engine overhauled, she refused to pay for parts to do the job right after the teardown, so I put the whole engine in her trunk 100% torn down after she paid me for labor already completed .......She was a little

My argument though was that I simply needed a bellhousing and clutch fork changed, and the bearing retainer cleaned up and lubed. Gladly pay for the labour associated with it, which was set up front before the work began. If they gotta push it out afterward, so be it.

I just got kinda peeved when they tried to go above and beyond that. Dropping 1000 bucks on parts is out of the question, and I'd rather try to resell the truck before that happened.

I can understand how Joe Blow would try and cheap out, and THEN be pissed when things didn't work right. I'm not Joe Blow though, and my expectations are strangely different. It's just too bad they don't really understand that.

Yep, and half assed jobs ALWAYS come back and bite you in the @$$ because now in the customers mind it is "Your fault" it broke.

Like the time I worked at Pep Boys...I put a power steering belt on for a customer and told them they needed a new power steering pump pully and they refused and the manager agreed with the customer , they came back a week later after it grenaded claiming I put the belt on wrong which caused the pump to turn twice as fast which is why their previously cracked pully exploded ....Pep Boys fixed it for them but I refused to do the work...I quit working there shortly after.

ooohhh you poked the bees nest, i can see things from both sides i have done jobs where some elbow grease to clean up some old parts that still had survice life were placed back in. its a call sometimes, i wouldent go cheep on something like the brakes but i re-use head bolts and havent had a problem. i do all my own work though so there is no-one to blame but me. if you think about it every part is on its way out, just a matter of how long

if i was in the survice industry again i would be much less inclined to do that, and if i did, i would let them know up front there is no garantee and dont come back wining. on second thought i am sure that wouldent work either.....its probubly a CYA on there part to i am sure.

In our lawsuit happy country these days, that no longer works. When defending yourself against the "hapless" customer, you are viewed upon by the judge as the "educated professional" and you should have excirsiced the decision not to do the job.

Yea, what towcat said, I have tried to run a business and got real tired of the people who make you change their headlight that went out while you were doing the brakes, tuneup or whatever. I actually had a guy tell a judge that I put too much power in his transmission when I rebuilt it and thats why the rearend went out. He didnt know the judge was a car guy good for me.

I used to have to pinch every penny so in rangers defense, IF the parts are removed and tested I feel it is ok too reuse what is good, disc, tob, fork, but I bet he has a bad pressure plate or someone left some bolts loose and the bell broke.
