7.3 IDI Block Deck Flatness / Trueness Spec

Inspected Block today. Getting about .002" between the middle 2 cyls on the P/S bank. Also appears one sleeve slightly protrudes above the deck ~.001". Asked to have them deck .003" on both sides and see if it'll clean up. After that should be set! It's might be in spec but I have room to deck and no better time than now to get it flat

decking the block is always a good idea when youre having machine work done.
when im just re-ringing and bearing, i cover the deck surface with dykem and use a 24" machinist stone and rib the deck with some WD-40
then check the unaffected dye with a straight edge.if its more than .003" out anywhere on the deck of the block or head, i have it resurfaced.

but beware!
doing this not only brings your piston closer to zero deck height, and your valve recess closer to the deck height as well.

just make sure youre covered!

ive also sent my pistons into Justin to have them shaved and coated.
i took .030 off on my big boost build.

Check valve recession in head. Russ (RIP) recommended near the max of .050 intake and .060 for exhaust. I think that is what bit me on my last rebuild . my pistons were not destroked and I had valve to piston contact on all 8. I used the Victor head gaskets. I currently have the max recession, destroked pistons and Fel Pro head gaskets. So far so good I hope.

what pistons are those?
the girth groove, as i like to call them separately from the sack sink, are wayyy different than ive used on my 7.3's

They are Mahle for 6.9 IDI. The 7.3 Pistons look different.
