With everything being said, it looks like it will be heading to a 'pro' for repairs. So.......

Who is the favorite for clutch kits? Stock engine, stock trans, daily driver that occasionally pulls a 7000-pound travel trailer. There are quite a few to select from, from what I've seen in a short period of internet research. Do any of you old-school, row-your-own gears gentlemen have any recommendations?

Driveline vibrations are a bear sometimes. All pretty good advice. I would lean towards an input bearing or maybe a thrust bearing in the trans. ZF5’s like to eat the input shaft seal and start the downhill slide with a leak. Not sure about a zf6.

Around here, shops that do manual transmissions are hard to come by. The one I used is gone now and it’s a shame. They were really good and reasonable.

As for clutches, I’m an IDI guy with more than stock power and I’ve not really had any issues with my LUK single mass flywheel and clutch combo. For what that’s worth.

My experience. Bought my 97 zf5 about 8 years ago with 177k on the clock. It had a vibration mostly noticeable at highway cruise speed for me, 65-70 and anything close to 3000+ rpm was always a challenge like it just didn’t want to go there. Also with a heavy load, 15-20k lbs, in lower gears it was very noticeable. I did all the standard things but it never changed and figured it was trans related and I’d have to replace it some day.

Fast forward to 3 months ago, I’m pulling my 10k holiday trailer from TN to WA and the throw out bearing starts complaining. I decide it’s time for a complete clutch kit anyway since I’m at 245k now. Wow what a difference and I wasn’t expecting it. Vibration is completely gone and the truck revs so much easier and smoother.

Shop said a I had a bargain brand SMF and a broken spring. I went with a Luk SMF kit and couldn’t be happier, best $1300 I’ve spent in a while.

Thanks...LUK is one I've seen mentioned a lot. I believe the last clutch hydraulic kit I bought was one of theirs.
At this point, just collecting info, advice, and opinions!

So, now we go clutch shopping! Sure are lots of vendors/choices/options out there...but I'm sure I'll find the 'perfect match' LOL! My Visa account is starting to love me!

I appreciate all the help...and to show my thanks, I'll inject a bit of truck humor at the link:

Cheers!

i actually had the throw out arm crack on my zf6. it added vibration at lower rpms. pedal felt soft and with 81k miles i decided to just put a better clutch in it as all i do is pull. repair shop recommended a puck clutch. i wish i would've went with a twin disc clutch as that puck clutch sucks on take offs with a fifthwheel in tow.

good point about the clutch fork. Known issue with cracking. The OP could remove the slave cylinder and measure the distance from the bellhousing opening to the fork. I'll have to look around for the correct distance on a working fork.

That issue was dealt with a while back, when I had problems with clutch hydraulics and a messed-up pedal and linkage (posted here, as I recall...). The fork measured out OK at that point.

The thing that's really driving me nuts about this whole scenario is the 'intermittent' nature of the problem. It has disappeared and reappeared twice in the last 6 months. No rhyme or reason...just goes away for a while, then returns out of nowhere.

I've pretty much resigned myself to the notion that it's gonna require professional help. I don't have the time, room, or desire to drop that huge trans in my driveway, and my claustrophobic nature prevents me from getting under the damn thing anyway, except maybe just far enough to change the oil & filter! And as long as someone else has to drop the trans, I figure it would be prudent to just replace it all, including that release fork. Don't want to pay for it twice, and I'm sure it won't be cheap.
