Replaced the throttle cable today. Pretty glad I got it done, it was getting close to becoming an issue.

The valley pan is full of oil, and it definitely looks like it's leaking from the air cleaner. Would a bad CDR cause this? Filter is filthy, but doesn't look "soaked". The dips in the intake bosses where the air cleaner bolts in were full of oil. Honestly the whole intake area and fuel lines look like they've been getting sprayed with oil mist.

Joking aside, I did try buying an aftermarket throttle cable once. It was so stiff and I ended up repairing the original (which was binding). The cable wasn't frayed like yours though, only the plastic sleeve on the end was damaged. I ended up rebuilding the end with a metal sleeve. Hopefully it will be good for another 30 years.

I know I’m late to the topper discussion but I am a soft tonneau guy. Less old manish. Keeps things dry. I’ve had the tilt ones and the trifold. Both had plus and minus. On the long bed I think I like the trifold better and I never have to actually remove the tarp from the frame which always sucks. Except the one time I folded it forward and forgot to lock the tie downs. It onfolded on the highway and the jack handle made a new window in it. Luckily replacement tarps weren’t too horrible. Stupid tax paid nonetheless. My only problem with the tonneau is you can’t see if the tailgate is up or down which has bitten me before... last time being last weekend.

I've seen that happen many times myself. Always fun going down the highway and watching something almost to the edge of someone's tailgate.....

That should be my project this weekend if I get a few other things done first.

You'll have to let me know how it works out. I've been looking at the Spircles but haven't quite pulled the trigger yet.

Yeah I know. After you mentioned it I had looked on eBay and almost bought one for $70 used. Still kicking myself for letting it slip by.

Covered in oil too. Not saturated, but covered.

Got a nice new Baldwin filter, complete with foam prefilter.

Well I couldn't have gotten more lucky with materials for the install. I was trying to figure out how to run hoses when I looked over at that 460 yesterday. I realized the smog pump had 1" hoses with a few different bends in them. Lo and behold....

Perfect fit with everything! I may have to go back and trim one of them a little more, it might be kinking a little (right there below the brake master cylinder). I did cut off the very ends where they had been clamped on previously. I literally had everything on hand. I used a small piece of coolant hose that had previously been part of my quick and dirty RDT, along with some kind of barbed PVC elbow and a coupler, all stuff I had laying around in the garage!

I don't know how well this is going to work. It was initially just venting to atmosphere under the hood. I noticed it has some kind of pressure relief valve that was super weak, and all the arms weren't pressing against the spring. I stuffed a piece of hose in there to stiffen everything up, and pressed it in far enough that it doesn't open just by looking at it anymore.

We'll see how it goes!

And now you have a new facemask, too! Imagine the admiring looks you will get when you wear it into Costco!

I'd like some more detailed looks at that can.

How it's made, how it works...

And yes, looking forward to news of how well it works.

Alas, sadly not worth getting oil all over my face LOL

I'll see what I can do about that at some point. I can tell you the basics though, and you can Google "ProVent 200" if you'd like to look into it.

Basically the gasses enter the filter at the side near the top, aimed at the side, so the gasses "spin" inside the housing, creating a vortex to separate the oil out. Then it has to pass through a stainless steel mesh (on the cheap knockoff ones) or a paper filter (on the original Mann-Hummel ones). Then it goes back out a hole on the side about 3/4 of the way down from the top. There is a drain nipple on the bottom for the oil to return to the crankcase (or in my setup, go to a drain tube).

I just plugged the drain tube for now, but I plan on adding a valve to the bottom of it to manually drain it.
