Holy crap. Changed the worn steering shaft out of my truck. Borgesson 980 is the replacement. Cut to size and paint it up. Truck drives like new now with the Red Head steering gear and all fresh steering parts.

Totally recommend. It took the last slop out of the system.

I went the cheaper route.
a splined u joint to the gear box, and a DD u joint to the column.

His motto is also die like a man.

LOL LOL LOL

Seriously though, I was going to do that but it was worth the extra money to me to be able to collapse the damn thing to install it easier. By the time you cut it down, there’s not a ton of room for it to collapse anyway. The inner and outer shaft are about the same length.

While the Borgeson is a quality piece no doubt, I have had cases where there is more to it. On the 80-91 tilt column the u-joint in the tilt area gets loose and isn’t readily fixable. Not available new that I have found. So that truck still has play. I believe a creative machinist could find a way to enlarge the pockets for the 4 balls that create the U-joint in the tilt area. Then install the next largest balls.

I don't know what happened but I got posted. Like I said changed mine last year and it did a lot of good. But I put on the Bilstein today and it made a hold new driving experience out of old blue the 86.

I will have to do this to my truck. Have replaced literally every thing else in the steering. Still a bit sloppy.

Is there a Tech thread on this upgrade?
Is it a simple cut and replace the joint?
I did not do a tech article but the gist of it is this. The ends are fine. You pull the steering wheel end joint off and cut the outter shaft so that it’s short enough to install when collapsed. I basically collapsed the stock shaft and cut the new one to that length. It came out good.

There are instructions on their web site which is what I followed. I did not grind the notch in the steering box spline shaft. I used the flat and it tightened down good. It’s really not hard at all.
