I just started running synthetic ATF in my ZF-5. The truck (94 idi factory turbo) has just over 200k on it, quite possibly with no transmission work.
The tranny seems really hot and bothered. I am wondering about tranny coolers for the ZF-5, and trans temp gauges. Do people just use a coolant temp sender, or do you have to get a special trans temp gauge?
once i do get a gauge, what is the max. temp. for one of these running mobil 1 syn atf?
After awhile driving around empty in the mountains it gets too hot to touch, and loaded it gets hot really fast, and gives me the sense that pulling max loads up grade would break it. So i have decided not to do that with it in its current condition.
Anybody have experience with old, worn out ZF-5's? I thought about taking it to AAMCO for the free diagnosis but from what i hear that might just be a waste of time anyway.
what should i do next? i want to be able to max this thing out, without destroying it.
I read that the max load for these is 12,000 #.... i am assuming this is the 9,000# GVWR *plus* 12,000# ????
thanks yall!
