I only had a truck with DMF for a minute. When I got it, it sounded like it was about to crater...found 3 broken springs and went with LUK SMF.

Just added to the remuda an '87 w/ DMF... rough idle, due to air intrusion or failed injector, leads to this SOB sounding like it's about to crater too... but no "jingle bell" racket like the busted springs on the DMF before this one...more of a chatter. Is it normal for a DMF to "chatter" when the engine isn't running smoothly?

Yes, being it isn't running smooth, the flywheel is getting "shock loaded" every time it hits that dead spot. Will destroy the Dmf quickly too

All the reading here about the benefits of the DMF sounds great... Till they fail. I believe they are supposed to make for smooth quite running trans. Going with a single mass flywheel brings up some gear noise and some here do not like that. I personally only have a few miles driving a ZF 5 speed that that was towcats rig. Not sure what flywheel it had but it was an enjoyable drive. I don't usuallt shift for myself being shiftless for many years now...

If I were going to keep this truck it would get SMF for sure. I only bought it for a "beater" to use while I swap the engine (still waiting on the engine) in my 85 SC.
I don't mind the noise from SMF, sounds like a truck, and definitely prefer the "clutch feel" with SMF.
Sure would hate to spend those $ on a truck that I don't need for very long. I really hope the DMF isn't screwed up. IIRC the DMF was a lot of $ too...

My dmf does indeed rattle some...kinda anoying when first fire up engine and runs bit rough.

The friction materiak in dmf gets worn as do spring bushijgs a d it isnt able to dampen as well as it should..

Single mass is easiest replacement....or live with it.

Someone has written up a way to make a DMF into a single mas wheel by drilling and bolting some parts together. Do a search for the writeup.

Thank you for reminding me! I had forgotten "lucky" mod....bet I'll have to get a sprung clutch though.
