I have decided to keep a truck that I am going to swap but the question is what do I swap. Here is the trucks specifics- 94 crew cab long bed f350 with 08 super duty axles(it had a blown idi)
And Here are the parts that I have:
00 7.3 powerstroke with 4r100
01 24v cummins and 47re
5r100 trans
Harness and dash from a 96 7.3 truck
Where I am stuck at is do I go 24v and 5r100 or 7.3 and 4r100?
I would like to make this keep up,drive, and be as reliable as my newer alumiduty so a manual is out of the question

24v is quite a bit more work than a 12v, for a lot more noise, and a lot less simplicity and reliability.

The 7.3 Powerstroke would be an easier swap no doubt, and much cheaper. You will need significantly more parts for the Cummins swap, and more parts than listed regardless of choice.

IDIs are cheap to come by, and to build up. They might not have as much power potential, but for the price, they aren’t too bad.

E4ODs, 4R100s and 5R110s aren’t particularly expensive to rebuild either.

I would stick with an IDI, but that’s just my opinion. I have not seen the best of results from early Powerstrokes, and their DT###E cousins…

A manual would likely prove to be more reliable than a 4R100, and certainly more than any Dodge automatic. The 5R110 would likely hold up best as far as durability.

Something like this probably won’t be quite as reliable as a newer truck, but done right, I’m sure you could get close.

A manual transmission is no less drivable than an automatic, in a given vehicle. But I can understand the preference for an automatic.

The preference for an auto is more based on long road trips and the wife. Also, cost wise it is about the same for either engine but the 24v allows me to go 5r100 to get that extra gear. As for an idi they are awesome but they are underpowered when it comes to pulling or even driving, even with a turbo

The 24-valves put out some good power just with an Edge tuner.

Long road trips make a good case for the manual trans. It's daily city traffic that makes people cave and go auto.

I don't know what to pick in your case. I had a couple of 7.3L powerstrokes and that (negative) experience turned me into a cummins 12-valve guy.

I wouldn’t consider them to be anywhere nearly as reliable as an IDI, far be it a 12 valve. Probably similar in reliability to a 7.3 Powerstroke, or slightly less so. Although the fixes and answers to such reliability issues are more easily remedied than a Powerstroke.

Haha my 35 year old truck is waaaay more reliable and less expensive to repair and upkeep then any of my friends 5year or less old trucks. Every time i turn around someone’s 6.7 ford or Cummins is at the dealer for something expensive. When we go out of rides with the horses toing 8500 lbs or more they have to stop more often for fuel then we do. Yes they make it up the hill at 65 and we do 55 but they also get tickets for 10 or more over and the higher fuel bill. I would not own a new truck if you gave it to me. I say build a 7.3idi and build a 4r100 to put behind it. You’re going to be in for less money and much more reliable. And just learn to slow down.

What gears are in your ‘08 axles?

What about a IDI build (350/700) and use a USShift controller for the 5R. IF they will bolt together. I prefer to stay mechanical but both the powerstroke and the 24v are proven.

Otherwise I would access your time and do what gets you going the quickest. Me, I have hardly any time or money, and would dream the 24v route.

None of those are real exciting....7.3 powerstroke would be pretty easy, 24v and 5r would be cooler though.
Reliability will come down to the quality of work done during the swap.

The truck was previously a turbo idi and having done a 12v swap and and other motors a 24v and 5r100 seems different.
The axles are 3.73's
Now don't get me wrong rebuilding the turbo idi is on the list but this is not the truck it is going back in.

Gotcha, I'm sure you already know that all ya gotta do to the tIDI is turn up the fuel & open the exhaust. Brings the power back that ford Detuned outa it. Best thing I liked was the lack of computer- MAJOR plus in my book. I had considered doing the Cummins swap too, buncha work, & then you gotta get an overdrive trans that'll work w/ it due to the different rpm's/ gearing. Woulda liked puttin a P pump on a 24 valve to make it mechanical, That's jus the ole skool in me. I'll sacrifice the fine tuning computer for mechanical any day.
That being said, I got a 275hp 24 valve in a freightliner service truck now.... Hard to build a truck that ya gotta work outa every day. Downtimes a *****...
Good luck with your build Dude..
