I here to warn you the E4OD is disappointing and may well re-ignite your caring. That was the case for me having had a PSD/ZF5 first, and a PSD E350 second.

There's no factory parking brake that bolts onto this Dana 80. The housing ends are different for 99+. I have seen a custom pinion brake done before though.
I have been beating on an E4OD for almost 19 years now. No idea when it was installed, it is a Ford Reman, and truck is sitting at 285k currently. When I bought my 93 F350 IDI in 07', I added a tru-cool trans cooler. Pulled heavy with it through the mountains many times. Keep it cool, it will last better than they are given credit for.

And my manual trans frustrations are because of crap sellers. Last one I tried to buy in September, 90 F350 4x4 sitting for a decade, not running. On my way to pick it up, trailer in tow, dude texts me and doubles the price from $1500 to 3k. For a non running, no idea if the tranny needs rebuilt etc etc.. After days of communication. I was giving him his original asking price so not like I was low balling the guy. Seems everyone with a OBS ZF5 thinks it's gold here lately. If one drops into my lap for the right $$ I'll grab it but I am done actively looking.

When I said I knew where a factory E-brake is, I was referring to the drive line mounted drum that came on these trucks originally

As you probably know, that assembly bolts on like a tcase.

If you choose the NP205 as your tcase, there are aftermarket kits for those to have a driveshaft brake.

Thanks for the heads up. I knew there would be some fabrication even with the factory brake but was unaware of the 205 kit availability.

Today's progress involved degreasing and pressure washing the new chassis. No pictures because it was cold enough out that I was freezing and just wanted to finish.

But man was it nasty. Paint came off in the very nasty areas and the metal underneath is spotless. So that's a good sign. Going to need to get primer in those areas before Saturday as rain is expected.

Also learned the big rear tank is plastic. I was unaware they made a plastic rear tank. Front is metal. On my 93 the front tank is plastic, rear metal. Considering swapping the plastic rear to the 93 so it has 2 plastic tanks. Wouldn't that be something.

The frame width and fuel tank mounting vary greatly between cab and chassis and pickup trucks.

Well since we've had good weather this week I was able to do more work on the truck frame. I degreased and pressure washed everything again, then set it on the trailer, flipped it over, and did the underside again.

Some needle scaling and then primer on the underside and anywhere I could reach with the spray gun. Still needs more prep and primer but that will be done when I flip it back over again.

But alas the weather has finally caught up with me. Going to have to move this indoors moving forward. That means I have to clean my shop. I need to clean it but man I don't enjoy it.

Stay tuned.

Now I remember Fsupers on the lots new as a little kid wondering what was up with a giant center differential front axle. Never looked into it now though and figure it was like a Quigley type company authorized post factory/pre dealer conversion.

Another idea could be that 2005+ superduty axles are cheap enough in junkyards now. I picked up a chassis cab 2009 F350 set for my '79 Ford camper puller build.

Great build series. I'm excited!

Started removing the interior of my new cab. I was disappointed to discover, after removing the seat, sill plate, rubber floor mat and weatherstripping, that the vertical rib on the bottom of the driver's side, where the weatherstrip mounts to, was rotted. So I'll have to fix that. Otherwise this cab has almost zero rust anywhere.

The rest of the cab floor is in really good shape with 98% of the paint still intact. It was a 2wd cab so I'll have to cut a hole for the 4wd shifter. Not a huge deal.

I also received my new core support from LMC. Finally after 2 weeks. Fedex lost and damaged the first one badly so I refused delivery and had a second one sent out. Then they briefly lost, 3 days of no updates for what should have been a 3 hour drive from North Carolina to here, and damaged this one as well, but it is minor and an easy fix. I accepted it rather than going through the stress of FedEx a 3rd time. In both the deliveries they stuck a forklift fork through the box and bent up some metal. They also in both cases messed up the shipping label and had to redo it as well. At least that's what the tracking said. When you're paying $210 for shipping, you expect better service. But literally every thing I've had delivered by FedEx since November has been lost, found later and showed up with damage. Sorry I'll get off my FedEx soapbox. Guess I needed to vent. I feel better now.

More pictures soon.

FedEx is by far the worst shipping service where we are at. Everything arrive looking like Ace Ventura delivered it. Not sure why they are so much rougher on the packages than the others.

with the e4od do you even need the park brake ?

I just gotta weigh in on this for everyone's information going forward....

When I had a shop I would be sure to see if the vehicle I was test-driving with the owner had a functional parking brake. Some would question the need and others would nod and appreciate my thoroughness.

If the need of a useable parking brake was questioned I would respond with this statement....

"If you knew how the PARK mechanism was constructed, you would NOT depend on it."

If you ever spent the majority of your adult working life with mechanical things...watching what would break and figuring out why and how to avoid it...and if you spent any amount of time studying the guts and housings of transmissions it would dawn on you that the PARK mechanism is more of an auxiliary NEUTRAL function with just a park mechanism as an afterthought to train drivers to secure their metal, rolling, ramming device.

Unfortunately, the PARK mechanism is just not that robust. THAT is why you should use your parking brake, without fail.

I learned that lesson yet again even at this late date after all of the admonishing I gave to all and sundry over my lifetime...proving that everyone can get slack and pull a dumb stunt.

I have yet to write about that story but it may come once I feel the inspiration to relive it again.

Anyway...a functional parking brake is a real good idea.

'nuff said...

I read somewhere that it is in the FedEx drivers manual that each and every package is to get the company approved drop-kick off the truck. I believe that they even take a whole day in the initial training of drivers to address this necessity.

If the required enthusiasm is not applied each and every time (regardless of size and weight) then the immediate supervisor gets involved with a company-mandated intervention and demonstration prior to a warning.

I also believe that there is a required 'package handling drop-kick sensitivity class" that each driver must attend on a regular basis...sort of a 'refresher' course.

I have come to the conclusion that this practice is a back-handed way to train package shippers to use plenty of package shock insulation.

Just ask @Jesus Freak if you don't believe me...

My first car was free. It happened to be a non-running Volvo 4 door, rub-off on everything that touched it faded red and automatic.
Once I got it running I had it in auto shop class to check the timing.
I had everything hooked up, running in park, and leaned over to rev it a little to get the rpms in spec for checking the timing.
When I opened the throttle, the parking pawl broke, and the car about ran me over.
If it wasn't for my cat-like reflexes........ I actually ended up in the engine bay with the engine running. Car didn't continue very far fortunately.
Amazing I wasn't injured at all.

After that I could drive in park with that car. It also lost reverse around the same time and I drove it with forward gears only until I found a manual swap in a junk yard.

Parking was interesting.

So yes. Working parking brake is a must for me.
