Whattya think of these two trucks?

Fellers, I have two trucks to present to you for a little critique. I know I want an IDI manual 4X4 Ford. A flatbed, dual rear wheels, and extended or crew cab all a big plus. Minimal rust, not afraid of something that needs a little work. I do have limited funds, but from what I've hearing and seeing there are deals to be had with the economy and fuel prices and all that. Looking for some input on these two, and if anyone knows of any I'd love to hear about them.

Might be a powerstroke as it is a 94, but prolly not as I see no powerstroke badge, and nowhere do they say its a powerstroke. It does seem like a nice truck, but they have to be way high to want over 9 grand for it. The most I would/could pay is 4 grand, and I think that would be a good deal.

The second is definitely in my price range.

Its a long way from me. I'm thinking 2k would be a good price, maybe not. They have been trying to sell it for a while, however dealers have time to wait.

I removed the third truck because it has too many miles, is too far away, and not a good enough description for me to even waste my time with. Sellers don't do themselves any favors by not describing their vehicles.

Would appreciate your opinions. I know there are some people from my neck of the woods on here, so if ya see something I'd love to hear about it. Or if any of you guys decides to sell I would really prefer to get a member's rig which has been well taken care of and all that.

My opinions are as follows:

Pickup 1: Out of your specified price range....we all have been there. But in the end if its what you want it may be worth it. It does have a turbo which is huge for these rigs!!!

Pickup 2: Lower mileage than #3. It has everything you specified (minus dual rear wheels) and is within your prices range. The biggest factor in my mind is that this one is a F350 which means a Dana 60 front end, so it should be better on front tires. Also, has a turbo, which I think is very handy in hill country.

Pickup 3: This one has the least of what you want. No turbo, no flatbed, no duals but it does have an extended cab. The other negatives are the graphics, bias ply tires (if the sizes given in the ad are correct) and possible rust issues due to location (although inthe pics there "appears" to be no issues.


With all that being said I would go with #1 if you can get the cash and its something you will keep. Otherwise go with #2.

The first one is most definitely a factory turbo IDI, if you want to know how I know, look at the VIN, it has a K in the middle of the VIN and K stands for "Limited production IDI Turbo Diesel".

That second one IMHO is going to dollar and dime you to death if it has as many issues as they say it does. But it would be an awesome truck when brought back to specs. A flywheel/clutch job is a MAJOR undertaking. And while you're in there you may as well replace the rear main seal and put a sleeve on the crank, cus at that mileage they start to groove the crank. Oil in the brake shoes could be as easy as brake cylinders, but could be as involved as completely going through the bearings and axle seals.

Thanks a lot for that, and all the other opinions. I can now apply that knowledge to any and all trucks in the future that provide a VIN. Kinda like on Dodges, the rare 1998 12 valves have a C or a D as the 8th symbol in the VIN.

my own opinion is that the first truck is overpriced however....seems to be the better of the rigs.

the second had a turbo on it but didnt come with a turbo stock unless they did an transplant with an idi turbo engine. so if they put the turbo on your going to have to see if shes been studded, if the pump has been turned up, if there is a pyro......the list goes on.

and as always if you go to look at a diesel remember to bring some test strips for sca's with you!!

I agree with you but if you looked at #2 you'll see the banks pyro and boost guages. And since its a 7.3 it doesnt need to be studded......
