This is on the driver side fire wall, between the brake booster and fender. Just below the hood hinge. It has a little "pull ring" on the top I assume to relieve pressure?

That's the water separator for your fuel system. Ford put it in that area on the earlier diesel trucks.

Whatever you do, please don't pull the 'pull ring'. Those have a rather bad reputation. They are supposed to allow water which might be in the fuel system to escape downward through a tube, to drain onto the ground. Very often they would not seal again, allowing an air intrusion into the fuel system. That air would make the truck run poorly.

One of Ford's "better ideas". Ford abandoned this style after a couple years, and put the water separator onto the fuel filter.

Thanks, that was my guess! My other truck (89 F350, 7.3) has the water seperator on the filter. The 87 truck seems to run ok (now) however I created a seperate "temperary" fuel tank just to allow me to start and move around, so the water seperator is likely a non-issue as the return line still goes to the original tank. Also, the "water in fuel" light is on! Since my plan is to make one truck out of two (I noticed another post with this title), I can likely change the filter head and use the 89 filter assembly when I swap everything. Thanks again!

ive had 4 trucks with this WFS. there garbage, and not replaceable.

These water separators are serviceable. The reason it will fail when you pull it, is that there is now a ton of crap collected in the bottom, and the seat will foul when you drain it. However, you should drain it! Unscrew the nut around the pull ring and you can pull the whole assembly out of the body, and then get down in the canister with a solvent and a pick to clear the seat. You can then put it back together. If it lets air in, you can always plug the drain hose with something to seal it.

Pulling that ring is like pull my finger. No matter what its going to be a mess. I wonder what the engineer was thinking when they designed this. I guess on paper it looks great but as Mel posted. Dirt is going to be trapped in the seat and air will get in. Many have plugged the drain line with a bolt to stop the air leak.

As Mel said, it can be serviced.
I recall someone here disassembling and replacing the orings.

I've never had a problem with them, mine work fine. But if you ever have an issue of leaking just add a shut off valve to the end of the drain hose.
