What is a good sounding exhaust and what is a good diameter. I don't want to go past 6 inch. Also should I run it straight pipe or with a muffler ?

I previously had a 3 inch setup with magnaflow exhaust. Sounded good but crackled a lot & didn't care for that. Now got a 4 inch with a straight thru magnaflow muffler and it got rid of that crackle. Sounds good but loud.

I'm running a diamond eye 4" dual kit from a 94-97 powerstroke and a turbine xl muffler. Very deep and not so bad with the straight through muffler.

I wish there was a Way I could hear your guys exhaust and get examples. I'm trying to make the truck look and sound like how I want it. Since power upgrades are limited for these trucks

tons of this stuff here,,, 3-4" is the accepted norm.
the diamond eye has started to gain popularity, the stroke kits damn near bolt on.

Mine came with 3" to 4" flex pipe at the back of the cab and into a 5" y-pipe through the bed and 5" stacks.

4" is the ticket. Deep throaty sound and plenty of flow for an IDI. Wouldn't go larger personally.

My truck had a 3" system all the way out the back with an unknown muffler when I got it. I have an ATS 088 non-wastegated turbo so I wanted to get the most out of it I could. So I cut it down and used some of the bends to make it straight piped out the side in front of rear wheel. It improved turbo spool, boost started to come on earlier and the "sweet spot" where it would really pick up went from about 2300-2400 rpm to 2200 rpm, max boost went from 7 to 9 psi, and slightly lowered EGTs. Then I bumped it up to 4" from the downpipe back with the same setup, straight pipe out the side. Boost comes on even earlier with the "sweet spot" being right about 2000 rpm, and I hit 12 psi on an unmolested ATS 088! And EGTs dropped some more. But as mentioned, anything over 4" is pretty much pointless. So I'm sticking with what I have other than I'll eventually get around to putting an Aeroturbine muffler on.
With that said, one of the best improvements I've done to top off the increased flow and further increase turbo performance is to wrap the crossover/up-pipes with header wrap. Heat is energy, so keep it inside the pipes to feed it to the turbo! $25 off eBay for a 50' roll and 6 ties, so it's a very inexpensive and easy to install upgrade (1 layer only used about 24', so even cheaper for a 25' roll). Now, this didn't do much for max boost for me, gained 0.5 psi. I could turn the fuel up more, but I don't need to smoke more than I already do at my normal driving elevation of 5,000+ Feet in mountainous terrain. The biggest improvement is how incredibly fast the turbo spools up once the wrapped pipes are heated up. Boost comes on pretty much off the line now, which is awesome when towing with a manual transmission! From a stop, empty, I can hit 11 psi by the time I need to shift out of first gear (which happens very fast for those unfamiliar with the low first gear in a T-19). The "sweet spot" I mentioned is now at about 1900 rpm, and the gauge damn near skips numbers if I floor it from there.
Anyways, size doesn't always matter :sly
End of rant LOL

I've got standard size coming off turbo heat wrapped into a 4" w/ a 5" tip dumping before the rear axel coming of the turbo. Did a 8 hour road trip towing without it being too load or droney. It's a little louder than your normal truck but parking In front of a house is not obnoxious late at night.

I just did a banks downpipe, to 4" mild steel.

I ordered 2-5' sticks, 1- U-bend, 1- 90, and a 3 hangers from Jegs...... Cost was $180ish. I almost bought a reducer which was 2-3/4" to 4" from Jegs also, but it was $30 something bucks. Instead I bought a 3"od to 3"id from Autozone for $4.

With a few relief cuts from the 4" bend to the reducer, and a little welding, I turned the exhaust out right behind the cab; just aft of where the frame sucks back up. No muffler, but it sounds damn good, and not too loud.

I don't hear all that well, but have asked my bride repeatedly about it, and she said,'not to loud, and sounds nice!'(she hears every damn thing I do, so must have good ears:). What I did notice is right when I hit the accelerator, I can hear a guttural 'throaty' sound; reminds me of hearing a train engine wind up.

We did take it out, and passing right by a building with a little acceleration, didn't hear too much of an echo coming off of it....

Lol, don't know if any of that helps, but I like the result!
