What gears do I have?

Will the VIN# tell me what gears I have?

The rearend code is on the door jamb sticker. It's accurate if the rearend hasn't been changed.

thats what i thought but there is nothing on the door jams or the doors or anywhere I could find.

Do you have a tach? What are the rpm's at 65 or 70 mph? Several on here can tell the ratio just by the rpm at that speed.

Don't forget to include tire size if they are any other than stock.

If you are due for a rear-end oil change, you can count the teeth on the ring and pinion.

I hope to start it for the first time tomorrow, I'll know more then. As soon as I get it home I'm changing all of the fluids and if all else fails I'll do some counting then. Thanks everybody.

The VIN# will tell you what it came with new. Like he said,unless it's been changed. I would bet it's 3.55 or 4.10 They were the most common I think

Nope. VIN will not tell you the rearend gear ratios. The VIN is considered the number in the windshield.

You can check the ratio by raising the rear wheels off the ground. Tranny in neutral. Mark the wheel and driveshaft so you can know when you've completed one revolution. Rotate the wheel one revolution. While doing so, count the revolutions of the driveshaft and there you go.

If you can go to all synthetic in the transfer case,rear, front diffs, and the trans if it don't leak, spent about 200 on mine but i had to buy some tools (i.e. grease gun,etc...) lots say not to go synthetic in the motor as it's a waste of money if your engine eats oil.

I would have never thought about marking the tire and drive shaft great idea, that's why I come here. I plan on going with all synth oil in the drive train, even the motor if it will stay in.

Check the sticker inside the B pillar on the drivers side door. There is an axle code. Post it here. (unless you think the PO changes the gears)

GM put a sticker in the glovebox,unless it's gone too. Take VIN# to dealer and they can tell you what it came with new. I've done it several times. It will tell you all kinds of info about your truck. They can make you a "baby book" if you want. It even tells specific part #s that were used on your vehicle. Gear ratio,axle size,color,options,even what tires came on it
