Waterpump Time

So my water pump is on its way out, its not leaking at all, but the play in the shaft is pretty good now. Does anyone have any good information about this fix. Is there a waterpump brand i should look for, or a special pump that is better. Anything i should replace while im there?

If you can afford it go with the unit from Ford, there is something special that has to be done to make sure that the top two bolts don't contact the IP gear. Some here know more about that problem than me. A second choice would probably be a new(not reman) unit from NAPA. The hardest part is getting the fan clutch and pump pulley off. Also you have to get that mating surface very clean. It took me days with a scraper then I went at it with a dremel and a polishing stone and it wasn't long before I had a smooth metal surface...no leaks! Then I used a lot if sealer on the top two bolts. If you want to do other things in the neigborhood a thermostat is not a bad idea. Most here will tell you to use only a Ford or IH t-stat. Many aftermarket T-stats are bad for our engines because they have a bypass, and the engine itself has a built in bypass. If you decide to go aftermarket at least use a t-stat that has the stock opening temperature and no bypass.

How do i replace the t-stat, where is it located? I got the waterpump from napa, and the T-stat from the ford trucks dealership. But how do i get to it? Im guessing the T-stat is located where the upper rad hose connects, but how do i remove that piece? I see one bolt is that it?

you have to pull the alternator, vacuum pump, alternator bracket in order to get to the thermostat housing. the bolt you see is one of two bolts.

Not a PITA job at all...in 20 years and 183,000 miles I'm on my 3'rd pump, the original and second aftermarket.
The clean up on the gasket surface takes some time.
