Water temperature Probe

It's time for me to install my "A" pillar gauge pod. I have an older Pyro from an L9000, a mechanical water temperature and a mechanical Oil pressure gauge.

There is no problem with the oil pressure gauge and where I have the line tapped in, it works flawlessly now. All I need to do is legnthen the 1/2 air fitting by about 6" with the compression fitting I already have to make the gauge reach the Pod.

The mechanical water temperature gauge, however, needs to have the probe moved to make the gauge reach in the pod. I have a 1990 IDI out of a truck and I noticed a plug between cylinders 5 and 7 (on the driverside, back two cylinders) on the head near the exhaust ports. It is a plug, but does it lead into the water jacket, or into the oil ports?

There is another port behind cylinder 8 (last cylinder on the passenger side head) with a plug in it. Is the the water jacket or the oil galley?

Right now I have my probe in the top of the water pump, which from what I understand, reads the water temperature coming from the radiator.

I put mine there(between 5 & 7). Its the same spot as the heater hose on the pass. side Works, but reads a little lower than t-stat. Say, 188 instead of 192.

This is an interesting thread for me as well since I have a mechanical water temp gauge that I'd like to get hooked up in my brown truck but don't know where to install it. I already have the gauge and everything in the truck, just don't know where to put the probe. I'd have to utilize something on the passenger side of the motor though, thats where the probe is at right now and I don't want to move it.

I think the two plugs I pointed out before hand are indeed ports into the water jacket. I will yank a plug out of my spare motor hopefully by the first of the week and post back unless someone else comes along with a post before hand.

they are both water jacket ports.
Use the one on the back, it may read a little high since that is the back of the engine.

The coolant flow path taken in these motors is from the back of the block up into the heads and out the front of the heads. Some coolant does flow up between the cylinders into the heads to but not very much.. The head gaskets are ported for very little flow thru them. Its mostly in the back and out the front. Then the two head flows come together under the injection pump and then it sees the thermostat... The oil cooler gets its coolant from the rear of the block and flows forwards and out into the front of the block...The hottest place will be the heads front port where the "check engine" switch is located.

Ditto on the location but I have a different out come. Mine reads 205, but then again, I have no idea what temp thermostat I have in it. I know the factory gauge stays between the N and the O, but I know that doesn't help much.
