Hey i just checked, fuse #8 for the radio is hot at all times.



I suspect it is. On mine thats the radio/clock memory.

Im refering to #11, the actual radio. Theres no way thats hot all the time or else the radio would play even when the truck was off.

You've got the right idea, but that absolutely positively IS going to come back to bite you in the butt. You can try to run it that way now, but why not do it the way it really has to be done? Why risk an overheat when you have so little to do to correct it? The problem with your design as has been mentioned, is that you have shut off the air flow to most of your radiator. Only the area in front of the fan is going to cool, and 1 square foot or whatever that is absolutely will not cut it. Not only that, but there is no chance of ever running without having the fan on. Even at road speed, a fan is hardly necessary on a stock truck, but you've blocked the airflow to a huge amount of cooling area. Now if you could stand that plate off by an inch or two, things would improve dramatically. You can deny the laws of physics all you want, but much like death, no matter how we try to think our way out of it, the inevitable will occur.




Thanks for the advice but as I mentioned I made this out of stuff I already had. After $100 for AF, $70 for the pump, and $100 for fan/thermo I really didnt have the money or means to spend more time on this. Had I had those I wouldve like to have gotten a 3/8" 2x3' piece of milled alumin with basically the same configuration. Then I could have spaced the shroud back another .5-1". The sheet metal is too flimsy to be spaced back like that. As it is with the supports front & back and flush with the mounting tabs its plenty stiff. FWIW, its not right up against the fins, theres a .5-.75" gap between the fins and the "shroud". I measured it a couple of days ago but dont remember exactly.

Like I said its a snap to pull the whole fan/shroud back out the way it is now and at least for the next 2-3mths during winter I think itll be fine. I can use that time to search/save for/fab a more "proper" set up.


BTW yours looks nice. Is that a factory set up from another vehicle or did you get into fiberglass??

I posted a few replies back that he should add flaps to the shroud that will pass air when driving down the road but close when the fan is doing its thing while at a standstill.



Could you ellaborate on what you mean by "flaps"?

Take a look at this thread from RLDSL. He is working on / improving a design for an E-Fan and shroud. Look at he pic in the first post, that is along the lines of what we are talking about....



Ahhh..thats a great idea. I didnt see where it said what the flaps were made of? Looks like rubber?? Are they hinged??

Anyhow thats something I could add to the new one I make. The current sheet metal would loose all structural strength if I did that now.

I think Im gonna end up getting some thick alumin to work with...

the flaps are used by OE manufacturers for added high speed cooling.

Jag, Mercedes, even our new Fords have pieces of rubber material thats 1/8in thick that will flex back and uncover the square holes to allow air to flow through. When stopped, the fan draws air through the shroud and through the radiator allowing for maximum cooling.

My fan is a two speed crown victoria fan. cooling the engine with it is not a problem, its keeping the head pressures down with R134a and the hot weather here. I found that on high speed the CV fan and my shroud work very very well at keeping head pressure in check, ice cold a/c and engine temps in line.

I feel like rubber over a short time would form back to the direction the wind blows when youre moving, therfore eventually not suctioning back when stopped to make a good seal.

I think I may try a very light spring style hinge for the flaps with metal/alumin backings, kind of like flaps for stacks. But less noisy.

The rubber flaps on my 1984 Mercedes are still perfectly intact. Same for the old Jag i have too.

Only problem I had is the dang things cooled TOO well :rotflmao

Well I got her up and running today, was a nice christmas present. Havent taken it for a test drive but its been run for 20min+ 2-3 times.

Wired it to the #11 radio fuse and everything works great. If I cut the truck off once its up to operational temp and turn the key back to the radio the fan runs for about 30secs then cuts off. Pump and all hoses/lines seem sealed up good.


Ill update this thread as I start fabbing a new shroud.

^ Thats a purdy radiator.

So did those fans come from two different cars or one?

My water pump has begun to weep. Any time frame for total failure?

The Ford dealer cannot get one in before a wheeling trip and I'm on tap to tow down both of our 4Runners.

No really accurate way to say when the pump will fail totaly. If your driving it towing best to take along plenty of water but even that can't keep the pump from loosing the fan and sending it thru the radiator. Thats unlikely but it is a possibility too. No stop leak will slow it down or fix a bad rotating seal....
