Water in oil ?????

I have a 90 model 7.3 IDI. It keeps getting water in the oil. I have done a top and lower end gasket job, replaced radiator, oil cooler lines, water pump, and all gaskets concerning oil or water. If i leave the oil pan plug out over night the radiator will completly drain through the oil pan. I dont know what else to do any Ideas ???????

If you haven't replaced the oil cooler orings, that's where the leak probably is. Do a search on how to replace them.

I serviced the oil cooler on our 85, 6.9 junker we got a few weeks ago. The big orings were rock hard and broke apart in pieces, no life left in them. I am still cleaning the system out as there was oil in the coolant reservoire.

But when going over the truck and trying to look over the engine, I definately found contaminated coolant, but I do not recall getting a hint of coolant and nasty mix of gunk in the coolant system with the oil? It was always black tar, no foaming at the dipstick, etc.

Things are looking ok in our situation, but your post caught my eye.

Our oil cooler was definately shot and mixing things, but I didn't get coolant leaking through the engine like that at all?? Are our trucks different or should I have got this leakage automatically if my oil cooler was shot?

To get that much water through the oil pan over night, caviation seems unlikely, especially if you can verify that you have no bubbles in your coolant at the radiator when the engine is hot.

Thats interesting-it makes me tend to agre with mel.If its cavatation I would expect it to build pressure quickly in the radiator (before it is completly warmed up even).

oil cooler will "usually" put oil in the coolant. Have you see any? I agree that's a lot of cavitation BUT if its not a head then cav is the most likely. Pull the pan and look up to see where the coolant is entering the pan.

Water in the oil.....that sounds odd

Sounds like you did everything but the oil cooler.

Fact, the oil pressure has the opportunity to be a higher pressure than the coolant ever see's, therefore oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil seems to be most common.

Once the pumps/pressure stop, all bets are off, gravity takes over, and...

Cracked head/block ???


The O-rings in the old oilcooler from my sig appeared to be made of clay and they still worked, the metal corroded on the end.



Good luck, maybe a pressure test on the coolant loop will tell you more.
Compression test?


This one is a head scratcher.....correct me if I'm wrong.....

Most likely the oil cooler orings, have to agree. Only other thing I can think of is when you did the water pump, was the backing plate heavily pitted?
