very basic rim question

So my parts truck came with these

Which i have come to learn are american racing outlaw 2s from this site. are these actual lug nuts? or some kind of lug nut cover? Do I need some crazy thin socket to remove them? NO clearance and I cant break them with a adjustable wrench.

Does the center cap come off first then any socket?

I never rolled with nice wheels before Im too cheap; any help would be appreciated!

Well the stock factory lug wrench wont fit but maybe the aftermarket deep sockets will. Just don't try an inpact socket on them. Those are very thick wall tools. Just buy a cheap fake autoparts store socket.

I am not 100 % positive but those don't look like the correct centre caps....JMO but ya a thin wall socket should work and ya I think those are the correct lug nuts

The answer to your first two questions is, yes. They are crimped on covers that are not meant to be removed. It looks like you have Rollin to put a12 point socket on there. It doesn't have to bottom and you could persuade it on further and make some custom dents in your center cap. Hard to tell from your picture but they make tall lug nuts that extend further past the radius.

just get a thinwall deep impact socket and buzz em off with an impact gun. we have things like this all the time at work.

Guess I will have to find a thin wall socket, cause none of my impact or regular sockets are even close. to autozone i guess!

I used a thinwall socket as well, but I don't have covers on my lug nuts. I also used a 5" extension (IIRC) Those do look like the correct caps, and they cannot be removed before removing the wheel. They slide into the wheel from the backside and have a lip to keep them in place.

Alright! Oreillys had a GM performance 1 1/16 socket that was 6 pt and had really thin walls, which worked! thanks guys!

Looks like plain old 7/8" solid --- not capped --- nuts to me.

NEVER use an air-gun on lug-nuts, unless you don't care to have stretched studs, crossed threads, warped rims and rotors, and a host of other head-aches.

Those ARE the correct center-caps and they insert from the back side of the wheel.

The wheel must be removed to remove those caps.

One big head-ache with those particular style wheels/caps is that the wheels are some form of alloy pot-metal and the caps are a very thin chrome-plated tin; galvanic corrosion will weld the caps into the wheels.

You will have to really get rough with the hammer of your choice to get the cap out of the wheel and such brutality will collapse the thin cap into a useless *** of metal.


My advice is, if you have good steel wheels, keep them and put those shiny wheels on Craig's List.

Only if you let the tire monkey do it...anyone competent can safley put wheels on with an air gun (and you dont even have to be competent to take them off, just get the right sized socket)

Guess I will have to be extra careful with these wheels! I am going to keep them because NOTHING sells for ANYTHING in tucson because NO ONE has any MONEY (including me!)

Will have to break torque with breaker bar then zip em off with the impact! I NEVER put lugs on ANYTHING with an impact, idk why, im crazy and like wasting time I guess.

Theres a diffrence from working at a tire shop and being a tire monkey, just because you work at the tire shop figuring your not brain dead then your not a tire monkey, once you stop using your brain and just worry about getting it in and out as quick as possible then you become a tire monkey

sorry about that. i for some reason was kinda ornery last night. we work to get cars in/out AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, but we never compromise on customer service, safety, or quality of work.
