The F350 dually turbo smokes upon start up very nicely. Smokes most every start up after that. The only fluid level dropping is the oil level. Very effectively dropping.
So, what is the recommended brand/ style of valve seals for the turbo engine? Intake and exhaust?
Thanks in advance!
PS, I haven't seen Diamond Eye's kit on the market yet.

Smoke of startup is NOT necessarily oil smoke. Most of the time is diesel fuel smoke. Does your smoke smell like oil or diesel?

If it was diesel smoke, I suspect it might have a black shade to it. It doesn't. Unfortunately the oil level is dropping at about a quart in probably 400 miles at best. I haven't had this on too many trips so the oil consumption is a bit of a guess. Maybe the engine is worn out at 127,545 miles.
I was thinking that a 25 year old engine might just have dried up and cracked valve guide seals.
I have heard of idi's going 300K. Maybe this one is not worth trying valve guide seals in before a major overhaul.
Then again, if the rings were shot, it would smoke under load going down the road and the oil pressure would be in the bottom of the gauge. Neither one of those seems to be true and with about 400 miles to a quart of oil, the seals might be worth a try.
I have seen some silicon exhaust guide seals and those piqued my interest. Intake seals seem to be all over the place but the Felpro name does get my attention based on the past. . . 45 years of experience of working with that brand name.
Then again, my diesel experience is in it's infancy and I am open to all suggestions. However, the oil usage, with the smoke at nearly every start up has me fairly well convinced that the engine needs the 25 year old valve seals replaced. I suspect the turbo with the increased cylinder pressure might, might have something else to do with it also.
So, if your in agreement, then what would you suggest for a simple vlave seal? Felpro? Other? Silicon? Other?
Or is 400 miles to a quart of oil and smoking like a banshee acceptable on these trucks?
Funny part is though, my '87 6.9 hardly smokes anything upon start up, cold or warm.

Have you pulled a valve cover off? Should be pretty easy to eyeball the existing valve seals, right?

When you're building boost, the intake is pressurized, so the valve seals should only matter when you're idling. Does it smoke under load, or only when you're idling?

Smell the smoke and that will tell you for sure. You are doing a lot of talking and you don't know what the smoke is.

Doesn't smoke at idle or under load. Just at startup and most anything if sitting for more than about 5 minutes. Under a heavy load and generally when it shifts into overdrive @ 30/35 MPH, it dumps out black diesel fuel smoke real nice. I guess less than 400 miles to a quart of oil is normal consumption for these animals.
Guess it might be time to start looking at either a Dodge or a GM Product.
Oh well.

What's an oil leak?
Not on this truck. I figure to get the valve seals done with Felpro and then if the oil usage does not drop significantly, the engine will get pulled.

Does it burn off the second quart as fast as the first?

Seen it talked about here that some guys will drop the first quart pretty quick for whatever reason, but then the consumption slows way down.

I'm just going to point out that I ran a newly-rebuilt turbo engine setup for several thousand miles with *no* valve stem seals whatsoever... with no noticable oil usage.
Oil usage is either leakage, or mostly passed the rings - remember, on a turbo motor, intake and exhaust are under positive pressure(slightly to majorly), so oil doesn't tend to go downward through the valve stems(unlike a gas engine).
This is also why you tend to get valve stem wear over the years, due to /lack/ of lubrication.

Also, good glow plugs, proper timing, and no leaking injectors will eliminate smoke, even when it's burning a ton of oil through the rings - I had one motor well due to be rebuilt(burned a quart every 100 miles or so, several broken rings, .020" bore taper)... but she still fired right up every morning and didn't smoke... because the IP and injectors were timed right at that point.
