It's been a while since I've been on here. I looked at a 96 f250 XLT extended cab, 7.3, auto, 4wd with 180k miles yesterday. There is a transmission problem. The OD light on the shifter keeps flashing. He also said the muffler shop cut something out of the exhaust. I asked if it was the cat. He said no, there are no cats on a diesel. I told him that some diesels did have cats.

The $64,000 question or 2. How much is the truck worth? He is looking to get $2k. Did the 96 have a cat?

96 had a cat.as for price its up to you really.is it worth the price to you?can you find something better for that price?but a tranny issue can get expensive with the e4od.

If the trans needs to be replaced, what would be a fair price for a used trans?

I figure that the truck would be worth $3500-4500 if the truck was OK mechanically. If the trans needs to be replaced and a cat has to be put on, that's a lot of $$$. If I could get it for $1200-1500, I would be happy. CA is smogging 98 and up. It may only be a matter of time before they start doing older trucks.

not sure about cali but here we dont have to have the cat on them as the passneger type diesels dont do smog testing.you can find a used cat cheap somewhere if needed im sure.

used trannies for these are still up there in price.i checked for one for my truck a month or so ago and they are still getting 12-1500 for a used tranny.you can get them rebuilt for around a 1,000 but youre takin a chance if its done by some tranny shop that doesnt know what they are doing with them.had my dealings with a normal tranny shop rebuild and will never do it again with these trannys.need to take it to a shop and get the codes pulled.it could be something stupid like a sensor somewhere if the tranny works and shifts fine.

the emissions sticker will tell you if the truck is cat equipped or not.
I have very little faith in these E4OD's of that vintage to begin with, used the odds are not good at all that you will get one that will last.

I've been trying to research transmissions. Is it correct that a 4r100 trans is a direct swap? I saw something about different sensors. Is this a easy swap?

Computer control and wire harness is totally different.

With the OD lite flashing it's gone into the limp mode, have to pull the code(s) to see whats wrong. Could be only the VSS.

it is missing its DPF. diesel partial filter. that is the correct term for the "cat". also take it for a test drive and pull the codes, best way to find out what is wrong with it.

The 2k price tag is cheap. And it was suppose to have a CAT originally. I agree w calvin on these e4od trans. They were not to great in stock format but when rebuilt w newer pieces thy cab be pretty much bullit proof. Any decent trans shop will rebuild it for 2k+. But like bill said, it could need a simple fix, not a full rebuild

The seller did mention that if driven for any period of time, the trans will overheat. Is there an idiot light in the cluster for trans temp? From reading through some of the trans threads, could it be the TC???

I am going to see if he will take less. $2k is cheap until you figure in a new transmission.

how does he know its overheating?

one big recomendation with these trannies is to get rid of the stock cooler and run the biggest aftermarket cooler you can get.if its indeed overheating it could be as simple as a blocked cooler or collapsed rubber hose connecting the lines to the cooler or could be the check ball in the fitting on the rear line stuck shut

A running 4wd supercab diesel w 180 is worth more than 4k. my buddy just sold one for 7k

I bought my 95 and 99 F350 PDS's new and both of them did not have a dpf/cat on them from Ford. TC is right the sticker will tell you.
