My ride is a '89 Ford F-350 dually, 7.3, C6/Gear vendor under/over.

I'm currently looking at transmission rebuild and having the Gear Vendors rebuilt. My question is should I keep the current configuration or replace with a Fresh A4OD tranny? I might add that I bought the truck with the OD "box" disconnected and have only used it by flipping a switch on the dash. With this said, I don't know how the truck performs if the OD works as intended.

Gear Vendors wants around $900.00 to rebuild unit. Should I spend the money on what I have or venture into the unknown?

Throw some coin at the Gear Vendor unit and rebuild the C6. It's already set up, so you might as well use it.:D

With the E4OD you will gain a lock up converter, plus a stand alone controller to tune your E4to shift the way you want. This will cost more than your C6/GV unit rebuild.

I'm surprised nobody has come up with a lock-up converter for the C6 as many as were made and as tough as they are, you'd think you might sell a few if they weren't brutally expensive.

Rebuild, rebuild. REBUILD.

E4od core + rebuild > c6 rebuild + GV rebuild.

The last c6 I got rebuilt was 700 with a rebuilt TC and some goodies put in. Shifted firm and positive.

You have a good setup rebuild it...or...

Get a built E4OD and another Gearvendors adapter and have dual OD like Gary has....depends on what you do with truck...

Just sayin..

It would probably be less money to rebuild the c6/gv. I am currently running a c6 with an overdrive and a Hughes low stall towing torque converter in it. I am happy with the setup and like the simplicity/durability of it.

The e4od would give you a little more efficiency. You would want to make sure it was rebuilt with all the upgrades to make it durable. Add a BIG cooler if you are towing with it. You would also have to purchase a stand alone controller for it.

What rear gears do you have? I believe the e4od has a slightly lower OD gear than the gearvendor (something like .73 vs .8). You could to the e4od+the GV.

What it boils down to is your preference. I could argue both sides, and did when I was looking at purchasing an OD for my c6 or switching to an e4od. In the end the c6+OD won out for me due to my situation.

I also was surprised that there isn't a locking torque converter upgrade for the c6. I looked into it a little bit.......I don't think it would impossible, bit It would require some custom machining etc. I think the biggest hurdle is figuring out how to get the fluid to the torque converter clutches to provide the locking. If someone developed on I would be interested.

I would do the c6 and Gear vendors in a heartbeat. The E40d can be a good transmission, but can be really expensive also.

I like the effeciency of the E4 but I also like the simplicity of of the C6. After pullin out a few handfulls of hair trying to sort out E4 issues; Id much rather deal with a C6

I experienced a C6 and E4OD in the same truck and I'll never go back to an open torque converter. I'd sooner go with a 5 speed. The cost of properly putting together an E4OD and adding the electronic control systems will make overhauling the C6 and GV the cheaper option. An 8 speed auto would be sweet but also a serious overkill for most situations.

Sometimes you can find deals on a good used E4OD, but even as a fan of that transmission, I'd still have to say its a bigger risk that slapping in a used C6. There's just so much more to go wrong with the E4OD.
