I have 1995 7.3 manual transmission I believe that the previous owners may have used 10w-30 or 40 in it. Can I switch back to an actual transmission fluid without damaging anything? Also is there a filter in this? I know that automatic transmissions have a filter but what about the manual?

If your trans is an aluminum cased ZF-5 (that's what it should be) you can switch back to the proper ATF no problem, if you are concerned about the residual oil after draining you can; drain the oil, refill with ATF, run for 1000 miles drain again, then refill with new ATF. There is no filter. The original spec for the ZF-5 is Mercon ATF which is more or less a dead spec. I use the traveller brand stuff from Tractor supply, it is very cheap and perfect for this. application. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/traveller-atf-dexron-iii-mercon-transmission-fluid-2-gal
