right now my truck has the 4 speed od and it has good power.... would a 5 speed be better for geting the power to the ground?

You have the automatic E4OD? I've never driven an IDI with that transmission, though I have one on the floor of the shop that I need to sell. My experience with the C6 auto has been that a lot of power is wasted spinning the torque converter. With the T19, the throttle response is instant. My right foot is directly connected with the rear wheels.
The same may be true for swapping the E4OD for a mannual tranny, but with a locking torque converter, it may be less dramatic.
I'd swap in a ZF5, but I don't like (hate) automatics.

Yep... while the E4OD is a good tranny - I have loved them but they are no where in the league of putting the power down to the ground. I had a 6.9 NA with a t19 4 speed that felt stronger than the Enterprise with all her mods (turbo and water/**** injection) with a good solid E4OD off the line. I never towed with the Phoenix but suspect that I would see the loss of power from the mods. But either way a manual is always going to be better at fuel mileage and also at power to the ground hands down.
