I posted a few weeks back about how my truck often runs rough right after startup when it's warm, but doesn't do it when it's cold.

This morning it was 24 degrees outside and the truck sat out all night without being plugged in. I glowed it for 15 seconds and it fired right up. Ran rough for just a couple seconds, I gave it a little afterglow and it smoothed out, then I kicked on the high idle when the oil pressure came up a bit.

Now compare that to a few days ago, it was mid 30's and I had the truck plugged in for at least 3 hours in the afternoon while I was at work. I started it up to leave, glowed it for about 12 seconds and it was running rough and smoking so I gave it some afterglow a few times and it was STILL running rough and smoking and would not smooth out, and it was too warm to kick on the high idle. I had give it some throttle a couple times before it FINALLY smoothed out and stopped smoking.

***, I don't get it.

Easy on the afterglow there pard... you don't need it. Once it's running, if you have a dead cylinder it will only be that way a few seconds. Most likely, your due for a fuel system refresh. Time for a new pump and injectors. If it were a gas engine, you wouldn't question the need for a tune-up by now. Same deal.

If your running streight diesel, try adding some motor oil to your fuel. It thickens the fuel a little and helps close the gap that is probably forming in your advance piston. I'm talking about 6 gallons of it to a tank full. Just be carefull in this cold. Get it too thick and you will have starting issues. Add it experimentally a few gallons at a time.
