On to the next, next issue, I checked the glow plugs while they were out of this thing and I found 1 that reads open and the other 7 have various resistance readings. I looked at the base and they are autolites so we will be replacing the entire set as they are needed in PA in winter and from research on the site I see Motorcraft plugs seem to have everyones approval. Today I gave a check to see if we were getting voltage to the plugs when cycling the key, I used Bat - for my ground and touching several connectors at the plugs found no voltage present. I do hear clicking which I assume is the glows turning on, but no power out to the plugs, so I'll assume the controller is bad. Is there a particular controller that gets a thumbs up?

You have to have all the GP's in and in good shape and if the ambient temp is 70 or above the GP relay will turn on and off for up to 2 minutes.

Your controller is probably OK.

Check your supply wiring before condeming the controller. If you have the later system there is a wiring plug over the pass side valve cover/HVAC box area that loves to melt and present a bad connection for the controller supply.

I'm into helping you guys help me, figuring out forum functions is much easier than reinventing the wheel when there is an abundance of knowledge and experience that can save me much aggravation.

Just went out and removed the air cleaner and the cover on the relay. Checked the "heavy" wire on the solenoid and battery volts are present. Have to wait until the boy gets up, he works 3rd shift to test the output at the relay.

Now we are clear on what you have...

Beru zd 9 plugs are yer friend.

I do not know if there is a different controller or not than stock...they work well iMHO....also the relay is important too. I woukd likely stick with FoMoCo for controler and relay well depends what you can get.

A quick n dirty test of GP's is to use test light.

Attach clip end to BAT + then remove gp wire from gp touch tip of tester to tip of gp and tester should light...if not gp dead.

JM7.3CW Eh!

Ok, I just got a helper. I tested the terminals on the solenoid. One of the large ones has bat volts all the time. We cycled the key to glow, the other large terminal with the resistor has nothing and both of the small terminals have bat volts. Am I thinking correctly that the other large terminal should have bat volts?

Ok resolved the issue, the solenoid was bad. it would cycle and close but did not conduct across the main power terminals. No more cranking for minutes to get it started, fires right up.
