I'm all about the positive control clutch. What were you finding for $500? I checked out a thread with reference to a horton clutch. Looks like a bolt on, but could be too long. Right now it isn't a priority, but some day I'm going to try one out.

Bumping this for a long term report....

Has this worked out ?
I figure the seal will fail at some point no longer holding the fluid in place .

my '89 clutch doesn't seem to change with the temperatures hot or cold its pretty stiff to turn by hand..... but i cant complain in the summer- cant hardly get it over 160*, winter though - its a pain: gotta install a block heater, place cardboard betwixt the radiator and condenser & let it warm up once its started. :)

The little bit of fluid in a clutch wouldn't require much of a leak for it to leak out. Maybe put a plug and refill it when needed. I considered doing this on the school bus, as the cheapest clutch/fan I could find was close to a grand, but I found an NOS clutch for 100 bucks shipped and went that route.

For 100 bucks for a new one, I'd find it hard to mess with "fixing" old one.
