The pump builders say to time them both the same. I do believe that the early specs for the 6.9 said to time at 1400. The pump builders also say that they both equal out to the same specs at 2000. Also, IIRC, the specs for the 6.9 at 1400 were 3.5+/- 2*, not at the 8* +/- 2*.

After some looking around seems like 2000rpm is the choice for both 7.3 and 6.9. Some like factory 8.5 BTDC and many suggest 9.5 BTDC works better for them.

As IDIBRONCO mentioned, early on I believe when the Ford tool used the glow plug flash (Lumosity) method, it was conducted at 1,400rpm. Then a test of the IP advance was done in conjunction to see if in spec.

You may find at 2,000rpm your IP is still within spec. 8.5-9.5 BTDC +/- 1 degree.

Yeah I revved it up to 2000rpm and it wasn't much different. After I posted the first time I went back out and re timed the truck. At 1400 I noticed it was holding a little higher than9.5, so I retarded the pump slightly. So at 1400 I had close to 8.5. And once the rpm is jacked up the degree goes up slightly. So I'm right in the area +/_ 1 degree.

The "Diesel Diagnostics - 6.9L Engine" section from the 1986 CAR/TRUCK SHOP Manual shows the IP is timed at 1400 rpm--see attached PDF file. So, it would appear the 7.3L is timed at 2000 rpm, but the 6.9L is timed at 1400. I have the complete section (#25) if needed.
