I got my VSS replaced today.. Easy enough. Now I'm looking for info on replacing the tach sensor. I need to know what kind of hoops I need to jump through, to get access to it. The vacuum pump sits right above it.. :dunno

Here's a pic... Thanks to Mel..

It has a very short thread, and it is easily changed. We pulled, cleaned, and reinstalled the one in my brothers truck in less than 10 minutes a few days ago. About the easiest thing to fix on these trucks.

P.S. Thanks for the PM.

It's still early! I guess I'll have to go pull and clean mine right now! I've already replaced the VSS and installed a DuraLift electric fuel pump on it today... My mechanical lift pump decided to become a gusher today. cookoo

P.S. You are quite welcome!

Ya need a new one then. Cleaning it only fixes it about half the time.

Really its even less than half of the time, lol. Sit down when you call your stealership for that thing, you need to have a good foundation under you when your legs give out. Not as much as the frickin $80 7.3 water in fuel sensor, thats just uncalled for. For a plastic piece of crap that breaks every third time you change the filter.

I called them Friday and was quoted $63 for a new tach sensor. I'll check with one more, before I buy one...

So that's what causes the tach falling to near zero at idle? Mine just started doing it, I was leaving a diner this morning and it was at the bottom, but would read nice and steady when I got above 1000rpms? Then it magically fixed itself as I was driving, all was fine till I parked the truck at my job site trans shifts perfectly normal. Then tonight I head out and tach reads good but trans shifts high, then again it magically fixes itself as I'm driving. I get home, shut off, then I fire her up again to back her up in the driveway, tach is being stupid again, and I'm sure trans will follow suit. Sound like the tach sensor being the issue?

Well, we'll see about that - the fact the issue is intermittent suggest to me the sensor hasn't give up the ghost just yet. So I decided to venture out and pull and clean it, sure enough tach reads perfect. Just to make sure the PCM ain't gonna act up for the first few miles till it realizes the input signal is good (like last time) I pulled the battery cables to clear all codes, so hopefully tis all taken care of now. By the way, that tach sensor face was just nasty, I mean the oil was dry and caked there, no wonder the thing wouldn't read right, tis a surprise it read at all! And here's the silly thing - just yesterday I was at the junkyard, and there was a 7.3 truck with the tach sensor sitting right there, I got its dipstick (mine was broken) and CDR valve but I never even thought of snagging the tach sensor :frustrate
