What are the symptoms of a dieng DMF clutch? hoping mine isnt going bad, but i wanna make sure so i can catch it early.

tow things to check for.
one. lock to lock freeplay. 3/4" is max
two. check the springs to see if the flywheel is ready to give birth to a flying damper spring.

springs falling out when you take off the inspection plate was a good sign to us.

lock to lock?
when i had it in neutral today with the clutch out i heard an intermitant noise like something was clsnking around that went away when i pushed the clutch back in...had me a little worried a spring broke. if it is still light tomorrow after work ill check the insection cover.

it makes a little racket when it shuts down but nothing different than any other diesel i heard...its hard to explain the sound it makes when i turn it off...

On mine the flywheel would start to rattle really bad when the truck was idleing in nuetral. It sounded like a hammer hitting against a solid piece of steel. When I first got the truck it rattled occasionally but could be stopped by tapping the throttle. After about 6 months it got to the point where if left to idle for more then 30 seconds it would begin to rattle and wouldnt stop until the clutch was engaged! Not only was my flywheel failing but my clutch also starting slipping around this time as well. When I finally pulled everything apart to put in the Luk conversion I found that all the springs were broken and the clutch had already been replaced with a Luk and fell out in two completely flat pieces. It was amazing that the truck was even going down the road and still hauling trailers.

hmm...the sound i hear is like something is rattleing around inside. i went to fuel up for my dad because he got home late and i had it in neutral with the clutch out while i checked my milage and heard the noise. it went away when i pushed the clutch in...ugh, i hope the DMF isnt failing cuz i dont need the expense right now.
how much is the SMF and southbend or luk clutch kits?

I had the same rattling sound you are hearing, and my truck made some funky sounds when shutting it off. I bought a SMF kit from southbend for about $600 CDN. Installed it over a weekend, started the truck up and now it sounds like my transmission is full of marbles. I would give anything to go back to my old rattly DMF. Im not saying you are going to have this problem with your tranny but its something to think about. Myself as well as a few other mechanics think the noise in my tranny could be due to my tranny being fatigued and the SMF not absorbing the torque spikes like the DMF would Since im currently in school for 2 more months and only working part time on the weekends i can not afford to put any money into the truck. So it got parked a couple months ago and i havnt driven it since. Im now driving a stupid cavalier. Im thinking once i get out of school im going to pull my 7.3 and ZF5, sell those and put a cummins and some sort of manual tranny in its place.

well i tried to get the inspection cover off but the exhaust is in the way. i did peek inside and didnt see any foreign objects so im ok...maybe i was just being paranoid.

my truck was the same way. i had to pull the exhaust to get the cover off. luckily the exhaust on my truck was very easy to remove, i was really surprised.
also when i pulled my inspection cover there were no foreign objects either...i dont know what foreign objects could be in there but when i finally pulled my DMF i found that all the springs were worn flat on one side. and almost all of them were in atleast 2 or 3 pieces. i was suprised none of them had fallen out inside the bellhousing because they were falling out in pieces once the flywheel was out of the truck.

Mine started off with a slight rattle and gradually got worse. It took over 6 months for it to get to the point where it wouldnt stop rattling. If converting to a solid flywheel I would recommend Luk flywheels and clutches. I got my kit direct from them for 600 bucks shipped. This included everything that was needed to put it in. I get a bit of gear noise when I lug the motor a little or when taking off with a trailer, but other then that their is no noise that I can here.
