Still having tach problems.

So I installed a new tach sensor today, Still reading real low. Idle is around 400 adn gettin into it still never goes above 1K. Tach nedel moves steady, just not reading right. Any ideas?

I will try to check the grounds when I get a chance. What are the odds that the gear teh sensor reads of has a broken or missing tooth cuasing the tach to read low.

The tach sensor reads off the IP gear itself, it's not the same setup as the VSS. Definitely check your grounds.

On the IP gear are there tabs for timing, or just a single tab?

It reads the teeth of the gear.

Alright, i was wondering if one tooth was made a little taller or with different metallurgy to set it apart.

I havent been into this motor yet. so i am guessing. Grounds look good, Shifts have smoothed out, but the tach is still low. .

Yes threads look good. i ran a jumper from the ground to the sensor with no change.

I am searching for a pciture of the IP timing gear for the 7.3 to help me wrap my head around it better.

no check your ground at the back of the instrument cluster. i forgot what pin it is but my truck had a bad ground there and it would read very low.

Don't mean to hijack your thread but mine does the same thing,when I turn the lights on the tack dies,

Mine works all the time. lights on or off. Just always really low. I think the ground on the gauge panel makes the most sense. Just have to find out which wire on the plus it is.

Otherwise, you might want to check the wires coming off the sensor, they are known to go bad.

Usually the wires that go bad on the sensor are right at the sensor itself. The oil leaks through the sensor and out where the wires go into it. I think what Patrick said makes the most sense as well...

You are thinking too much. The sensor is only a magnet that picks up differences when each gear tooth swings by. The tach operates on the different speed of signals the sensor sends to it.
