Stant thermostat warning

WE just got through doing a head swap on a truck and went with one of the new style Stant thermostats that is supposed to be acceptable for use, but if you are going to use one of the things, they come with a rubber seal around the lip. Remove the rubber seal from around the lip, it comes right off. that way the metal will fit properly down into the groove in the block and the gasket and waterneck will sit down on it properly and seal. If you leave that rubber thing on there it leaves it hanging too far up and the waterneck won't seal properly and you will have a nasty leak. The groove in the block is only cut down deep enough to allow for the metal by itself. I have no idea what that rubber ring is for, but maybe they are using this thing for another application.

How much was one of those? I paid 25 bucks for a Motorcraft one. Unless they are 4.99 I dont see a real advantage of using something that potentially wont fit/work

The Stant one was about $30, but unfortunately a real one was about a hundred mile round trip away and we were running way behind on time trying to get a head swap done and get the truck back on the road and the stant one was available right in town.

The two 1807974C94's I've purchased from the International Truck dealer here come with that rubber ring around the outside also. Yeah, I just pull them off and toss them back in the box with the old T-Stat. Go figure.

The powerstroke uses the rubber seal around the t-stat(that is what seals it). It is possibly the same one

I don't remember if the IH or Ford ones I have bought had that, but I imagine if they did I left them on. Hope it's not to big of a problem. My truck runs in the right temp range by a mechanical gauge, no coolant leaks and has done so for at least since I got the water pump and oil cooler done.

The rubber is the gasket in many vehicles, thanks for the heads up!

The one from Ford # RT-1049 does not have the rubber on the flange. It does come with a gasket though.
