Spun the fan off

Ok,
So Mater has put me to right to the brink of self destructing. This project has been nothing less than difficult the entire way from start to almost completion.

Well tonights story is this.
Fighting the front leaf springs half the day between 2 trucks only to find that my old 85 has the rearched spring set on it to find that there's a different bracket to lower the front axle assembly.
Ok, no problem over 2 hours wasted getting them off.
So I have to use the ones that I got from the goat smuggler on on of our parting parties.

Got them on fairly easy then decided to call it a night after 6 hours of working on the truck.

I start Mater up and he dies. When it does, I hear this loud metal clank so I go up front to investigate and :***: the stinkin fan spun off and I hear fluid leaking. I figure that the bearing took a crap after the hours spent attempting to remove the old fan clutch assembly as it had seized up.
Nope not that. It was a nice hole punched in the 2nd radiator in the truck in a weeks time.
Now I'm fricken burnin mad. Neighbors prolly heard me after that.

So that was the radiator that I got from Trav that was his backup radiator for the E.

I've decided at this stage of the game to drain some of the coolant out and make the repair on the radiator in the truck and see if it holds. Reason being, the plow brackets really make it impossible to get the radiator drained without loosing half the coolant, while working around the plow assembly. That and I'm just getting plain fed up at trying to get this truck together before it really starts to snow.

Anybody ever have that type of issues with a fan coming back off after being tightened up and prolly no more than 30 minutes of run / idle time?

WOW that Sucks! Sorry to hear that Ron. I haven't hear of that before, and I am out of radiators, unless the one out of the Doner truck would work

I use Blue Loctite on half of the fan threads and a 3 foot long SnapOn braker bar to tighten it up. These motors have really high compression and when the stop turning really quickly after you shut down the motor it has a tendency to loosen up the fan nut and you guessed it. A wholey radiator or worse, a broken fan, rad and shroud.

i have heard of this happening a few times to a few different people i would also suggest using loctite on the threads.

I have a great tool that uses and air hammer and special wrench attachments. After you get the pulley and belts installed and tightened up right. You select the correct wrench then set it on the fan nut and take the air hammer with the adapter and seat it into the notch on the wrench. Hit the trigger for a second and the fan clutch isn't coming off till you want it too. I have used blue locktite in the past to anchor them but after having the clutch pull that same stunt three times in a customers truck I broke down and bought the ****** and used that to tighten it. If anyone is interested in one it's made by Lisle and the part number is 43300.

Sorry to hear about your fan in Rad.....I know what thats like on my Bronco this summer....damn seized clutch exploded and the fan flew into rad while I was on a BEER run....Grrrrr....

I feel your pain - I have had that happen to the E when we were putting the 2nd engine in her - she fired up and ran for like half a second then died followed by the same sound you heard - trust me I know how mad you got.

I ended up installing a new fan clutch and water pump because upon inspection I found that I had cross threaded the fan assembly when I put it on - after that I never had a problem again and we all know how many times I had the fan/rad combo out of the E. Check your threads to make sure you didn't cross thread it like I did. It's actually pretty easy to do if you were tired when you put it on last time. I know I was it was the last thing I did before starting her up after a long day of wrestling the engine into place.

you are not the only one, happened to my old truck that my BIL owns now. he put a new clutch on and didnt tighten it enough. he took it to a local guy that soldered it up since it was only a couple of fins for less than 50 if i remember right. the radiator was only about a year old that i put in when i had it, it was the big sucker two that went from headlight to headlight.

Sorry to hear about this. In my experience this type of thing is caused by a bad fan clutch.

Hope your luck starts turning around.
