Serpentine system shim placement

good morning folks.

i was wondering if i could trouble some of you with serp systems to go out,
look at your truck and tell us the proper placement of shims behind the water pump and crank pulleys.
pics would be greatly appreciated!

this engine never came with v-belts.
besides i dont like tightening belts!
and with 5 belts that need to be tightened.... SCREW THAT!

Serpentine is a very simple belt system. Never tighten a belt again. Keep a spare belt under the seat. Not 5 under the seat. Remove one and replace one. V belts usually see the alternator belt fail. So ALL 5 belts come off to reach that belt. We try to make these engines simple. Now I realize if any of the pumps stop turning we are shut down with a serpentine belt. But how many times have you read about that happening.

Just ran out with the flashlight and camera and I do not have shims that are visible on the 93. I also did some searching and saw no mention of shims.... why would there be shims on the pulleys? kinda of idi greenie so I am watching for the answer. I did find the fan and clutch on my outfit is Spanky new...

Shims are used to keep all the pulleys in alignment. Site down from the alternator to the crank pulley. The alternator can't be shimmed in or out. But the crank pulley can. So can the water pump pulley. These are the only 2 pulleys that have shims.

If the tensioner pulley is making the belt slip off or run the belt out of line, you need a new tensioner. The older tensioners have a nylon sleeve on the long mounting bolt that wears out and lets the pulley sag just a little, causing problems. I've changed over from V-belt to Serpentine on a couple engines and never had to shim pullies.One did have that sleeve worn on the tensioner mounting bolt. Just saying.

Make a Ceramic sleeve.

No shims on mine at all sorry.

i have a new idler and tensioner
my waterpump pulley seems to be a RCH out of alignment.
i still havnt had a chance to put my rig under the knife again, but ill be pulling it all apart soon.

My 93 factory serp has no shim on crank pulley and none on the water pump. The water pump has a washer on the outside of the pulley that can be a shim if installed under the pulley but I tried it and the pulleys do not line up with it there.​

Parts motor has one on the crank and one outside the water pump pulley. Need them?

Yep, behind the crank and in front of the water pump pulley on parts motor and my 94.

They all seemed to have one between the bolts and the pulley on the water pump. There's one between the bolts and the pulley and one between the pulley and balancer on the crank. That's if I remember correctly.
