School me on Starters

My starter locked up on me the other day. Since I plan on keeping the engine out of this truck, what is the best style of starter to get, and where do I get it?
Autobone has a lifetime guarantee starter for $130. how hard is it to change this thing?

Whatever you do, make sure you get a gear-reduction starter. The article above shows a picture of what one looks like, along with a more detailed description of the advantages of having one. Mitsubishi, Nippon-Denso, and Bosch all make gear-reduction units, and they're generally more expensive than the direct-drive starters you see that are made by Exide, AC/Delco, etc. I paid $199 for my Mitsubishi from Pep Boys, with a lifetime warranty...I figured that it's worth it in the long run, and I've proven myself right once so far.

you will save yourself a TON of cursing with the starter in Warden's post. the one in your ebay pic is a real challenge to get the top bolt in. Both will work. One is just easier to R&R...

I thought that starters that didn't have the "cone" around the shaft (like that eBay starter) were PSD starters? Or do I have that off?

the ND will work on our trucks. the nice thing about the "no-cone" style is that it is more tolerant of dinged teeth on the starter ring gear. downside is that there is no clear shot to the top bolt. Not even an awkawrd shot...its a **** to deal with.......
oh yea...one more thing....the ND will not tolerate volt drop and amp surges like the mitsu will. if you drop below 300rpm engine cranking speed, the ND will commit suicide by an internal meltdown.

My service manager just bought that starter off ebay and said it was fairly easy to install, no problems at all. His truck starts easier than ever now. Turns over faster too. I know the next starter for my truck will definetly be a G/R starter, but I think I'll get mine from Autozone that way I don't have to wait for a replacement and dealing with s&h.

I finally changed my starter yesterday. I'll been trying to get the most of it for months. Yesterday A.M. she started, but I think that was her last with that starter.

I went for the NAPA $250. Preminium rebuilt Mistu offset gear-reduction. I can't believe difference. She spins so fast. I can't wait for a real cold morning to she what she's really got.

Changing the starter is about one of the easiest barn-yard mechanic jobs out there. Just remember to un-hook BOTH positive cables from the batteries. This is also a good time to clean all battery/starter related contacts.

NAPA, at least here, sells two kinds of starters. One costs about $250.00, comes with a two year warranty, is a new (not rebuilt) starter, and requires no core. The part number for this starter at NAPA is 4N-6265. The list price is $405.85, but you can get them to give you a discount.

The other is cheaper, rebuilt, has a one year warranty, and requires a core.

The price might be different, because I get a discount due to my place of employment, but this is the basics are what is available from NAPA.

I got mine at Autozone a few years ago. ...Duralast-offset gear reduction Mitsubishi, part # 16561 , price $129.99 US dollars, core charge = $120.00 USD( so take old one with you), Limited Lifetime Waranty. Even if your old starter is a different brand (mine was an AC Delco ) get the Mitsubushi- Autozone doesn't care. For what you guys paid at NAPA I could get another and keep it behind the seat for when I find one of you guys stuck in a parking lot somewhere .
