OK I did the mod Thursday.:D
But I am now in the club of HEY YUOR TRUCK IS ON FIRE!
Nope just the crankcase gasses and LOTS of it for an engine with only 50k and the turbo!

The good thing is, no more oil being puked out all over the top of the engine.:puke:

I have tried to find the thread from awhile back where the RDT was talked about IIRC there were some that tried a containment bottle.

What I am looking to do but not sure of the feasability is to dump the RDT into a catch bottle but still have the gasses vent as I have discovered since adding the turbo there is way to much pressure in the crankcase for the CDR to keep up(a good chance it has failed already!)

I was looking thru the catalogs trying to find such a device but without luck.
Anybody seen some monster like what I'm describing or has anyone made one from scratch?

I'm gonna stick with the RDT but I have to do something about minimizing the gasses floating around as Goldie idling looks like Pigpen from the Peanuts.
OR some spooky mystery truck coming out of the mist..........

Here's what I'm going to try and use. I had it leftover from my Supra project, so it's a bit too blingy for the truck...

Hopefully I'll get mine on in the next week- I'm waiting for some hose adaptors. I have the same problem of the CDR puking oil on my engine, and I can't stand it!

I am going to try something different. I want to try one of the crankcase evacuation systems on my truck. It is not turbo (yet) so I am not sure how it will apply to everyone, but I am going to look up a set of extra valve covers to do the mod on, anyone have a set they want to donate?

Here is what I plan to install - Crankcase evacuation

This would eliminate the problem. Mel was going to try the kit I had, I mailed it to him and he never received it. I just received a replacement one (free via USPS) for the item getting lost. So, I will most likely pull my 3 inch Autojet y-pipe and hook it up. I want an extra set of valve covers though for two reasons, one if I am not happy with the results, I will put the old ones back on and two, I want to "prep" them (clean and weld in bungs) without having the truck down while waiting.

So if someone wants to donate a set of valve covers or know where I can pike up a set reasonable (will be watching ebay), I will do the mod. I can do a write up with digital pics if you want.

I bought a simpler version of what Sle's talking about (take a look here) about a year ago. Haven't had time to install it yet, though.

Another board member bought the same kit and installed it, and was quite happy with it. I haven't seen him around here for a while, though...

I remember this, didn't someone have some kind of reclaimer for sell?

i had a 1.9 that pushed oil out the valve cover, (HIGH Mileage) i wish i took a picture of it i took a gallon jug ran the hose in the lid and then ran another out the handle to the breather. i'd check the oil every couple of days and if needed i'd open the jug and use that.cookoo

I did what The Warden has , but added an anti backfire valve on it.(checkvalve) I removed my muffler and straight piped it, in the piece of straight pipe I installed that kit. No smoke under hood, and not to noticable out of tail pipe when sitting, unless you know what your looking for.... Done for a year now and haven't touched it.

Not really a simpler version, just doesn't contain everything.
These Dynatech crankcase evacuation kits are designed to vent unwanted crankcase pressure or air out through the headers. They include a weld-in fitting, a plug, and a thread-on tube adapter. A breather, check valve, and hose are sold separately.

The version I have includes two of everything (except hose) as well as the anti-flowback check valves. I wouldn't install one without it because at certain exhaust flow (whenever exhaust pressure exceeds crankcase pressure) you could flow exhaust into your crankcase, not good. I think they are the same kit otherwise, the kit I have just has a breather cap with an element to help collect oil out of the oil vapor and allow it to drain back into the engine.

Take a look at the Beryl Air/Oil separator kits used on aircraft piston engines. The oil removed from the vapors is sent back to the engine. Clean vapors left over. Very simple device.

I think the system I have will do much of the same. In my gasser experience with this setup, the valve cover breathers filtered a good bit of oil out of the crankcase vapor by running it through a steel wool type media, then it concentrated and dropped back into the engine.

I am going to use a weld in bung on the valve covers with a twist lock style of breather rather than the push in type. Hence my desire for an extra set of valve covers so I can take them to the machine shop have them cleaned and then weld in the bungs and have em painted and ready to go on before removing my old ones that already leak like a sieve!

Hey guys, is the extra blowby an inevitable result of turbocharging? If so, any opinions on which of these devices is teh simplest to install? I've also thought of running the racor CCV system. I haven't seen it listyd in this thread, but it looks like it does a good job, albeiot its pretty expensive and I really wouldn't know where to find it right off the top of my head. Have a good day,

Hey JD,
I don't have a turbo yet, but will probably get one eventually. I just don't care for the CDR setup on these trucks. I even purchased a new CDR and it seems to have solved much of the blowby, but I never really noticed a bunch from the oil fill anyway.

Something to keep in mind...personally, I would be wary of oil separators on a crankcase vent system on one of these engines (particularly a turbo'ed engine that's putting out extra crankcase pressure). At least my engine is very susceptible to any backpressure in the crankcase vent. When I first did away with the CDR, I tried a breathing oil cap (basically, an oil cap with the steel wool mesh oil separator and holes to let the blowby gases escape), and it put enough backpressure on the crankcase that the pressure found an alternative exit...out my front and rear main seals

I got lucky; the front main seal was new and malleable enough that it resealed after I switched to the tube setup I have now, but I ended up needing to replace the rear main seal... (although that ended up giving me an excuse to put the ZF5 in the truck  )

Yeah, I would tend to agree, but keep in mind, there will be two of them (double the airflow out) as well as having suction on them pulling the pressure out. Not to mention, these are not "heavily" filtered like the ones that have holes underneath. I have had several of those apart and they actually have a sponge in the bottom of them, MAJOR restriction. These breathers I have don't have that. At any rate, we will find out as soon as I find some valve covers to mod. You have any you laying around you want to part with cheap?

Thats' pretty scary, about the seals. I don't want to have to replace them. I don't see a lot of blowby when the cdr is installed, some, but not a ton, and then only at idle. But when you plug the cdr and just plumb a line to the crankcase, there is quite a bit at all rpm. I was going to go to a slobber tube, probably would have it it was little to no blowby, but I just felt bad about dumping that much oil vapor right into the atmosphere. What do you think my best option is...other than new rings and valve stem seals. Not an option; it still runs too sweet for that,
J.D.
