Replaced My Rear Brakes Shoes & Springs For $30!

Well, before I headed out to my parts truck I fired up my truck and went to pull out of the driveway. The passenger rear wheel brakes were "binding" up on me. I rolled under the truck and backed the brake off a bit until it quit dragging. Hopped back in the truck, and then the driver's rear tire would lock up when I pressed the brakes. I decided to pull the drums and see what was going on (a job I was not looking forward to since I have the D70 in the rear). I jacked the truck up, pulled the axle shafts out, removed the outer wheel bearing, and backed the shoes off a little more to remove the drums. I found the upper spring in the passenger side broke and the others all looked old. The shoes were "glazed" from rubbing, so off to the parts store I went.

Three years ago when I bought rear shoes for my '88 they cost me $72 without the spring kit, so I was expecting a nice chunk of money gone for the repair. I have commercial account at the local parts store, so I told them what I needed. The guy grabs the parts, types in my phone number, looks at me and goes "That'll be $28.68". I thought there had to be a mistake, but sure enough, I got NEW brakes shoes (12"x3") and the spring hardware kit for both wheels for just under $30. The truck stops a little better now too. I'm going to inspect the front brakes this weekend because I'm starting to get a little sqeaking coming from the driver's front pad that goes away as soon as I start to apply the brakes.

I'd have complained too. That's not enough money for those parts to last more than a year.

I get Motorcraft, and don't have to replace anything until they are worn out.

heck i still remember my 400 front brake job, all new moog loaded calipers with hoses and roters. and i did the work myself so no labor.
