Buddy's '01 F250 went weird on his wife. It was
running fine, she was leaving a parking lot and it
sputtered and was only able to reach about 20mph.
Ideas? And does he need a thinghy to read codes?
The engine light is still on. It starts with a bit of
difficulty and runs. Will rev up in the driveway but
no power and no real road speed.

Fuel filter and yes, he needs a thingy to read the codes. Manny Moe and Jack will be of no help to him in this case.

UVC harness is what powers the GP's and injectors. If you suspect one burnt, unhook the connectors at the valve covers and check the pins, you'll see evidence of burning there.

One connector for each cylinder then? If one is burnt
then that cyl won't be firing? Would that just not cause a miss?

Note: my suggestion was fuel filter, not UVC harness. I just explained what the UVC harness is and does. You might also look into the EBP valve for being stuck closed.

I know. And I appreciate your help. ;Sweet

The EBP valve is like a "brake" for warm up?
This sounds like it could be the cause as well,
if it was stuck in the closed position. I think
that, and the fuel filter will be the first things
we check out, and go from there.

the exhaust backpressure valve, or EBPV is not unlike a heat riser on your Dad's '72 Caprice.. and they use it for the same thing.. divert exhaust gas through the intake manifold to speed the warm-up of the engine

thing about it is, if it's stuck closed, the engine will NOT rev up..

does it seem to hit on all 8 or does it have a miss in it?

It has a bit of a romp that smooths out with a tap
of the throttle. Didn't do that before this.

the UVC harnesses will have one plug with about 8 wires in it.. unclip it and look for burnt spots in the connector

Everything about the sudden onset of your issue points to the crank sensor. It is 37 dollars from FORD and takes 3 mins to change. When they fail they give weird symptoms from low power, a miss, to a no start. I would suggest a replacement for no other reason than peace of mind

We discussed this part too when we were on the phone
this morning and he recalls changing that about this time
last year. Last time it failed, it would start, run 'til warm,
then stall. Let it cool for a bit and it would go again
'til it warmed up. Kind of like a PMD on a Chevy ****.5 LOL
