Let me start off with saying hi, i have been lurking for a while and just bought a 1994 F-350 dually 7.3 IDI turbo diesel. Here comes the bad run and drove fine when i test drove it. Bought it and on the way home about 15miles down the highway it started to loose power then i pulled over and it idles but sounded like it was not running on all cylinders. Once i turned it off it will crank and "try" to start but will not fire. Suggestions it is being towed to my house as we speak.

pop the hood open and check all the injector fittings, if fuel is leaking out of any of those, it could be getting air in the system. my 84 6.9 does this, will start run fine, whenever i pull a hill or crack it past half throttle, it speeds up, then runs really rough, and sometimes dies and wont start. if i let it sit for 10-15 mins, or huff it with a rag with a little gas on it, it will start. hope this helps

hmm. make sure both of your batteries are good and charged, and if your turbo setup is similar to my 84, take the plastic air induction thing off, and either get a rag and huff it with a little gas, or shoot a small amount of ether and see if she cranks over. if you do the rag trick, be really careful you dont let it suck in the air box. if she runs, id just make sure its got plenty of diesel, and run some gas line antifreeze, sea-foam works best in my experience.

air intrusion. how full are the tanks, replace the fuel filter, make sure that fuel pump is spitting out correct amount and pressure of fuel(google intellidog idi to find this).

If the fuel tanks are down to 1/4 full you probably are out of fuel. These trucks have a terrible fuel tank suction head. They break off and the last 1/4 tank of fuel is not possible to suck out. Hope this is all thats wrong with your new ride. We are here to help but you have to ask questions. Welcome to the forum too. Glad the top of the engine is dry too. To check the filter for fuel all you do is crank the engine and presss the schrader valve and see what comes out. The schrader valve is the tire inflater looking fitting on the side of the filter head. Best way to check for proper flow is to remove the inside of it. To do that you use the same tool you would for any tire or tube on any car, bike or truck. Your lift pump might have failed to and if it did thats a simple 2 bolt repair item.

and if the fuel filter looks really old. id replace it. one time mine died on me, i called a mechanic and he said just try a new filter. i thought, yea right, my luck something worse had to have happened. but sure enough, put anew one in and she fired right up
Quick update the fuel tank gauge does not currently work not sure what is wrong with it, but i got he truck home tried to start it with it on the front tank. Very hard to try and start would idle for a couple of seconds then die. Switched it to the rear tank and it started ran rough for about 15 seconds then started to smooth out. Guessing it was literally just out of diesel or wont pull from the front tank. I put 5 gallons in the front tank when i drove it home but switching it to the rear tank seemed to help. Also the truck has a 70gallon tank in the bed and noticed that it has 2 hoses that run into what looks like the top of the front tank or something not sure. They might have bypassed the front tank and made the selector run the 70gallon in the bed. Will drive it around a bunch with a buddy following tomorrow and see if it everything works fine. Is there anyway to just connect the front and rear tank with a couple of tubes and have 1 big tank tied together? Also where should i begin to start checking why the fuel gauge will not work.
