was getting a battery light and low volts so i got the alt tested and it was low.
then when i put it on it was doing the same thing? i had a spare volt reg and tried it i looked ok but at 2000-2500 it over amps?
i went ant bought a new reg and it was ok last night, but when i tried to go for a test run today it over amped before i could get out the drive? what is going on here? what test should i do or can i do??
thanks

Over amps? What do you mean by over amps? The alt. will only produce the amperage that is drawn from it. So if you have a 100 amp draw, and your alt. is capable of producing 100 amps, then it will. So to go "over amps" you need a large draw on it, something could be shorted out?

I recently replaced both my alternator and regulator. With the new parts installed the alt woul work fine for several miles, then start to peg the voltmeter and blow circuit breaker I have in the line before the fuse block. Also, the batteries would drain down to no/nada/zip volts overnight. I returned both alt and reg to O'Reilley's and got new ones. Same problem with new stuff. I considered taking the truck to a auto electric shop to have them chase down the battery drain. But at $60.00/hr rate I nixed that idea. Then I went to Autozone and bought another new regulator. Installed it and everything is working perfect now. Moral of the story= Just because a part is "New", it doesn't mean it ain't Autolite/Crap. Be sure to disconnect the batteries and be sure the new reg is grounded.

I can second Okie...I keep a spare volt reg in the toolbox. They (whoever they are) say that when you replace your alt you should also replace the volt reg. Anyway one other thing you could check is the pigtail and connection to your volt reg. I kept getting the dying batts and low voltage and I couldn't figure out what was going on. My pigtail had obviousy gotten hot at some point and wasn't making a decent connection. I ordered a new pigtail from LMC and I haven't had any problems since. Just something else to look at.

i guess i should have said over volts? it does peg the gauge I've checked and rechecked the wires and added extra ground everywhere i could. my speedo goes crazy too, oil and temp is ok could it be a dash problem? batteries are ok no start problems or dim lights?

have you had any of the stuff tested. if you get a person with half a brain at autozone they can confirm the working status of the stuff. if he hooks the regulator up to the machine make him run it a little to see if it goes when it warms up.

other wise make sure you got some clean connections like mentioned so the alternator is getting clean signals from the regulator.

This is a regulator problem.

Your speedo is mechanical. It shouldn't be doing anything funny at all.

i was thinking that it was mechanical, but when it pegged when i was doing over 55 and then started bouncing? i was wondering what was up? so if i take the reg in they can test it?

I'd start by putting a digital volt meter right on the battery to test. Don't rely on the dash in this case.

the instruction for the alternator said it takes 10 mins for the voltage to settle out? so today it ran great and it never over volts? did it just need to be run?

The only time I have heard of that was on the old 6 volt systems where you had to polarize the current flow! Guess anything is possible, I would definetely keep an eye on it, with a good gauge or as Mel said check it at the battery with a DVOM.

dont trust the dash gauge , ours sits at 8 v until ya smack the dash, then it reads somewhat correctly.

Yes I've got new gauges on the way, and when i went to start it today it turned over a little then went "click click" looks like new batteries in the future?:puke:

hate to sound like a broken record but are your connections good with the proper ground straps?
