One truck out of two.

I have opportunity to buy two 1986 ford F250 pickup trucks for $500. The one was modified by a telephone pole soon after the owner had spent $1800 having the heads redone with rocker arm updates, resurfacing, new injectors, and glow plugs.

The other one is a 4WD with a bad engine that the guy bought thinking he would take the good engine from the wrecked truck and put it in the 4WD and have himself a good 4WD truck. Then he lost interest in the project and bought an other pickup and just wants to get them out of his yard. The one with the good engine has an Air Research turbo kit . They are both 6.9L. I don't know which glow plug setup they have. I'm not very fond of the early one.

I really don't need the project but I am really tempted. I have not gone to look a them yet. The man said that the wrecked one has an automatic transmission and the other has a manual. They've been setting for three years.

I was thinking of just getting them cause I've got a 66 Ford F350 flat bed that I've often thought of putting a diesel engine in and with those two trucks I'm sure I could get enough parts to do it. It would be cool having a turbo charged 6.9 in my old six cylinder one ton. The 66 F350 is set up with a 200 foot cable power take off winch for getting firewood. I also use it at times for a equipment mechanic service truck. I think the fuel mileage would improve with a turbo charged diesel. I get about 10 mpg with the six cylinder engine that is in the 66 now.

Any opinions about such a project would appreciated.

id go for it--and--the four speed behind the diesel may have a diff pattern then the one in your 66---so use diesel one--should have the side dumps for the winch---convert it to the newer gp's--87's or so--much more reliable--could also get a 5 speed out of a newer truck for better mileage--

Heck for $500 you could make money parting them out even after you're finished with them.

That would be one sweet ride if you can get the diesel in the '66. Take lotsa pics so we can drool all over our keyboards.

Sounds like a heck of a deal, Should be able to make most of your money back parting them out after you get the parts you need off them. Hell I would be tempted to build one nice 86 4x4 with them

Lake Isabella is about 40 miles northeast of Bakersfield California. The trucks are in Bakersfield. I just happened to get acquainted with the owner at the shop where I was having my 84 Dodge Ram 50 turbo diesel's front end aligned. I am going to go check them out on Monday or Tuesday and take some pictures.
Then if I decide to get them I'll have to get them home. I don't have a trailer available but I have friend that has a dolly that I can use. But one lady at the Department of Motor Vehicles said that with out current registration I can't have any part of them on the ground when I move them. In the past I was able to get a free one way relocation permit if they were on non-operation. I think she is wrong about that and I printed off the DMV web site the information about the "no-fee special moving permit" to show it to the lady. I also want to check to make sure he has clear titles on them and that they are registered for non-operation. In California there are stiff penalties for late registration. Could be hundreds of dollars if they need to be brought up to date a few years.

The owner said that they were on non-op but I just want to make sure. Next week I'll check them out and take some pictures. If I can figure out how to post pictures I'll post them here.

Took some pictures today and got some more information. The brown truck is a 2WD automatic that was modified by a telephone pole and has a turbo charged engine that has had the heads redone.

The white truck is the 4WD that has a seized engine. I checked the dip stick and it showed no water or oil.

I have decided that I am not interested at this time. The guy just wants to get them out of his yard. A local pickup salvage yard said they would give him 250 dollars each. That is why if someone wants them they can have them both for $500. The 4X4 is pretty weather beaten inside and out.

If anybody knows of someone in the Bakersfield area that might want them I can give them the guys phone number.

Another problem is that the 4X4 has been turned in as "salvage" so it would have to be re-registered. The man has no pink slip for that one.

I told the guy that I'd let him know if I wanted them but I've got too many projects going now to take on another one so I'm going to pass them up. Also, there is no way to tell the condition of the running gear on the 4X4. It looks really well used.

That turned in as salvage bit isn't a total deal killer. THat just means that it was totaled by an insurance company and if you wanted to put it back on the road you would have to apply for a new title for it. The thing should come with a bill of sale and with that and the salvage record , you would be able to get a fresh title after getting it inspected , most likely by the local police, , most states the police have a form for doing that.

That one with the turbo looks like someone had taken good care of it and had an interest in the truck, right up to the point where it got crunched. That looks like a Hypermax cowl induction there in the picture as well. Might want to think twice. Could be passing on some good doner parts for your '66 At that price it'd be pretty hard to loose money on the deal parting them out. If I were closer those suckers would already be in my yard at that price
