hi folks, new to the forum here and I have an 86 6.9. my oil pressure cold is about 20 psi and when it warms up the pressure is about 2 psi at idle and then revs up to about 20. When I first got the truck 2 years ago it was about 10 psi idle hot and 30 when I reved it. The truck has just been sitting the past 2 years not running. I was wondering what all could cause low oil press before I pull the engine. Thanx, Brandon

Maybe more information would help in trying to give some reasons. First off how many miles on the motor and what has been the oil change intervals? It may just be worn out or a dirty oil pickup screen.

One other thought...have you verified it with a different gauge? Your gauge could have gone out of calibration, or if it's electric, the sender could be bad.
Worth checking out before you pull the engine...my experience is, if you're only putting out 20 psi on the highway, the lifters will let you know right quick...

I think what Tim said is right. I'd definitely change the oil and start with fresh stuff. Diesel rated 15w-40 or SAE30 depending on your climate. The lifters will start to complain even if you get more than about 2-3 quarts low, let alone if you have very low oil pressure. I would also verify that reading with a different oil pressure gauge. As to problems, you could have bad bearings, a bad oil pump, or a problem with the oil cooler spring. Can't remember what its proper name is, has something to do with the pressure relief system I think.
