Changed all 8 injectors today. # 4 and #6 injector barrels were soaked with oil, none of the others had any oil on them at all. Two on the pass side had what looked like baked oil on them. Could it be a cracked head or what? Or nothing to be concerned about. Engine runs fine with a little blue smoke until warmed up.

Beats me. I had an injector come out like that a couple times ago but the next time I took them out for testing that cylinder seemed dry without any excess carbon buildup. Truck still seems fine almost 4 years later, yes it uses some oil and yes it is not perfect but what else do you expect at 217,000 miles and change and subjected to my rookie mistakes. It also doesn't seem to have gotten any worse since I found the oil on the barrel. If you figure it out let me know. What's even stranger is that was the one injector from that batch that tested out as any good.

Makes sense David. When spring break is here next week I'm going to pull my injectors and have them pop tested I can;t wait to see what I'm going to find. If I have more than a couple bad ones I'm throwing n either the set from Uhaul or Pensacola Diesel. Going to shoot for a matched set, the best out of the three or so sets I have around.

I here its best to use old springs because they are broken in and wont loose pressure as fast as new springs

Bull... How did these wet injectors come out... Were they looser than all the others. What does the copper gasket look like. If the gasket has a line cut across it then you may have a seat problem. Have the valve cover gaskets been leaking... If they do leak any oil can be drawn down into the injector bores. The threads will not stop any fluids but the copper gasket will stop combustion.... hopefully you don't have a seat issue.... Ebay does have a seat cleaner up for bids....

Its not oil its fuel, its because thos injectors are leakers

Now David, an old SOB like me knows the difference between diesel fuel and thick black motor oil. No the injectors were not leakers.

Gary: The injectors were in so tight it took a breaker bar to get them broke loose, the copper gaskets were just fine. Valve cover gasket was leaking a little but not at that point.

That theory doesn't fly

diesel and soot will get awful thick and black

This is my truck - at Bills' place

There was no diesel fuel on the barrels
or the threads of the injectors

There was black engine oil covering the barrel & tip
with a thick layer below the threads

I know - I pulled them & replaced them

25K & 3 months ago ago both heads were diagnosed as needing
to be completely rebuilt - that shop diagnosed, pulled, sent out
the heads to be completely & then reinstalled the heads

They said the hone marks were still on the cylinders,
the bottom end looked fine

They did not properly tighten the valve cover on the driver
bank, oil was leaking from it

I pulled that valve cover & Bill inspected the valve assembly,
nothing seemed out of place

The valve cover on the passenger side was tight

I am thinking valve problems though, there is a slight
tapping on the driver side

Note:

Before changing the injectors - I went by the shop that
did the work on Saturday & was told I had a cracked piston
or broken rings

I was told there is no way the noise I was hearing was
related to the valve job they did

Then the owner tried to sell me a cummins engine

By the way, Bill is one helluva a guy & my good friend :D

He offered the use of his truck & company when my
truck was in the shop for the valve work back in
November 2010

We took a road trip to make scheduled deliveries ;Really

THANKS BILL

can you isolate which hole is doing the slight tapping by loosing the injector line to stop fuel from entering that injector and keeping that hole from firing? If it's an injector problem then it will stop tapping. but if something else it will keep right on tapping just have a miss....

Cracked heads ...

Went to Northwest Fuel Injection in Columbus Grove, OH
this morning

Compression test showed all cylinders in the 400 to 425 range with
the exception of #8 at 300

So, my conclusion is #8 probably has cracked head or rings

So, gonna put another engine in

Also gonna pull the driver side cylinder head & check to see
if the head is cracked - Bill believes this is the only way
engine oil could be on the barrel of the injector

Looking at a head - I agree

The driver side cylinder head had a broken exhaust valve
seat which was replaced when both heads were reconditioned
25K & 3 months ago

If the heads were not magnafluxed or checked for cracks,
this would explain the presence of engine oil in the
injector bore if the head was indeed cracked

Furthermore, if the valve repair was done on #8
that might explain the apparent piston damage/failure

This engine has just under 200K - the hone marks were
evindent when the lower end was inspected 3 months ago
when the heads were done

The oil pressure was also checked before the heads were
reconditioned

The engine has not been abused/overheated

I am the only driver

I took that a few years ago in Oklahoma

I think he has taken the semis off his property since then,
but I'm not sure
