I'm running a Motorcraft FL-1995 on my '85 6.9 engine. It was a tight fit, but I got it on there and its working great! Much better than the Fram filters that I was running (IMO).

I wasn't impressed with fram either. When I finally went to a ford dealer to see what a motorcraft FL-1995 would cost, it turned out to be comparable to what Lordco (western canadian parts store) wanted for the stock 6.9 fram filter. Never looked back.

I bought mine at Schuck's here in town. Fram was about $9 and the Motorcraft was $12. I'd much rather spend an extra $3 for added protection and a little more oil capacity. It appears that the Motorcraft holds about 2x the amount of oil as the Fram. I saw a chart showing the "flow" and "quality" of oil filters, and Fram was in the BOTTOM 2! Too bad Bosch doesn't make a filter for out trucks... It rated up near the top, and I use Bosch on all my gasoline engines.

Actually, all the fancy names aside, Napa silverline are about the best filters on the market. I went into a napa one time, and they had all the major filter brands with the cans cut off, and the napa was much better built.

Wow the Fram made it that high?
............I do not like to talk bad about any products there are many fine products on the market that will get the job done. I know that Amsoil is not for everybody and it certainly isn't the end all of oils and or filters. That being said using a Fram filter could be your end all for your motor eventually.
Frams have been tested to let the largest wear particles pass through its paper. The standard Fram filter will filter down to about 80 microns. 
Some fancier Fram filters will filter down to 40 microns. It is said by the oil industry experts if you can get down below 5 microns you will vitually eliminate the wear particles that over time cause damage to your engine. That is why many people opt for a bypass/dual bypass system. Once you have filtered below 5 microns now your going to wear the additive package out in the oil and not the oil itself or the engine. When I do talk bad or maybe bad isn't the right word but when I post things that caution against using certain products has very little to do with the fact that I sell Amsoil it more has to do with I am cheap a$$ and find it hard to spend my hard earned money on something that may damage my investment or something that really isn't worth the money. Therefore I tend to recommend the same to my friends and I treat my customers like my friends. If you want to use the products I sell fine if not I will steer you to a better product that a Fram or other product I feel will cost you money in the long run. Its all about making these trucks last without costing us money in repairs.
I will research the hell of of something before I buy it to put on or in my truck or my wifes car or my families cars. It must not be a waste of money to me, it must save me time or give me a benefit in some way such as better mileage ie: exhaust, tuner, synthetics in the entire drive train, the induction kit on my truck. That is what led me to become an Amsoil dealer as well as the FilterMags and Fumoto Valves. I researched and tested for myself and feel these are worthy products of my hard earned money because they will save me money in the long run and or save me money in the short run. I try to look at the big picture when taking care of my truck.
Sorry kind of off topic but the bottom line is please use a WIX, Motorcraft, Donaldson, Amsoil or one of many other brands of oil filter besides a Fram for your investment. Check the Micron ratings and what the media inside is made from.

kool thanks, ive used baldwin filters on for a few months, and at every oil change the oil still looks new on my 7.3. as soon as i switch back to a motocraft it goes black!

Anyone got a micron rating on all the different filters?
Got to change my oil in about 300 miles so I'm always up for something better. I'm running the FL 1995 filter right now.

I don't know about all filters but I can tell you the WIX 51742 is 25 microns. Hopefully others will chime in with the FL and other filters.

I would just like to add a little to this and if you want to read this thread I started. I would also like to start a thread with the Absolute Filter Ratings for all the filters we can get the information for. If you can add to it could be a good research source for our members here. Please call your manufacturer and ask for the Absloute Micron Rating on the filter and lets add it to the database.

i've also heard of the paper on a fram coming loose and plugging up the oil pump! i put a PS filter on my '92 and there was tons of room! i'm gonna use one on the 6.9 in the scout too!

you also have to watch with fram they have a cheap plastic drain back valve that can leak and bypass the whole filter unless they cahnged it recently.
i wont touch fram now, not much better than bolting an empty canister with a sock in it to your truck.
