Hey guys I'm new to this site. I work as diesel mechanic. But I was changing the oil in my 1990 f250 7.3 idi and are lube tech told me I need to tighten the filter down as tight as it can go because it leaked a little before. But I learned from my dad and college professer that you let the seal make contact then do 3/4 turn. It's always worked so why would my oil filter leak? It has the FL1995 oil filter on it right now.

Your lube tech may be from the school of "tighten it until it strips, then back off half a turn"... never tighten a spin-on filter as tight as you can!

It's possible that the o-ring on the old filter was defective or damaged; a little particle of dirt could have fell onto the seat; if it wasn't oiled before installation it could have torn a little; maybe it vibrated loose because it wasn't quite tight enough.

oh, and welcome to the forum :)

Welcome to the forum.Glad your using the larger 1995 that filters down to a finer micron than our standard 1 qt filter. My filter always leaks.I have had my oil cooler header off during an overhaul and used a fine double cut file to take out any high spots. nothing found either. No low places either.. Do you oil the rubber seal when installing the new filter?

A little leak after a few thousand miles isn't a big deal some seepage is normal, mine has streaks every change. Snug and a little more is plenty

go a little tighter, they are longer and heavier then most filters, truck vibrations may effect it more.

Yes I do and I always clean off the surface it goes on to.

I can't recall who. Maybe towcat.
But someone recommended you tighten then back off just a hair.
Reason is tightening will somewhat try to roll the oring, then backing off helps put it back in place.
