Oil change question

I believe this is my first post here. I come here mostly looking for information. I own my first diesel, so I have little to give input wise.

My problem: I changed the oil & filter on my 94 Turbo Diesel "K VIN" today, and added 14 quarts right off the bat. I start it up, let it run, then let it sit to check oil level. I'm about 4 quarts too much! I drained my change pan to check how much oil was in it when I drained it, and it was only 10 quarts. The stick was at the full mark before I drained it. Is it supposed to have 14 qts? My dipstick has a number on it, 1811229C3. It is not stamped Ford, so maybe somebody changed the dipstick, and I've been running a gallon low? It's 29.75" from bottom of the yellow handle seat to tip. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks a bunch! Scott

in my "k" model 94 i run the powerstroke filter and 2 3/4 gallons.

Welcome! Nope its supposed to hold 10 quarts using a IDI oil filter or 11 qts if you use a PSD filter. I dont know if the turbo requires any extra oil or not.

Welcome tp this site. All the baove postings are correct. I use the larger Motorcraft 1995 filter as most here do. Its filter media will remove a finer grade of dirt because this filter was originally designed for the early psd motors with the turbo. The engineers felt the turbo needed a cleaner oil....

As far as your truck goes go ahead and call it a 1994 IDI Factory turbo. I know I had to do a google search to find out what K meant. Maybe im just a little slow!? And fill out your signature with the specs of the truck and what all (if any) mods youve done. helps us to figure out a problem without asking you for detail every time.

To get the excess out, you can just remove the filter and drain it, then turn the engine over till it builds pressure, then let it sit about 10 15 minutes and check the level again to see how much more needs to come out, then pop the filter off again and drain off some more. Pour it into a clean container since this is fresh oil, you don't want to throw it away, you will use it later.

I'm going to take off the Purolator filter I just put on, and install a new Powerstroke filter. I'll crank it over a few times until it shows pressure, then I'll start it. That should get it to the right level. Thanks!

Do I understand you correctly, that you're going to remove the oil filter, crank the engine to build pressure, and start it? Start it with the oil filter removed? I think that might be a no-no. Rather than drain oil out, you're going to pump it out. I don't think that's such a wise plan. Draining it out is a slower and more controlled procedure. I don't think it would take too terribly long to pump all the oil out and run the engine dry. I'd suggest draining it instead, even if you have to remove the filter several times, running it between, with the filter in place.

Heck no! I removed the Purolator filter, which still had 3/4 qt. in it, and installed a FL-1995 Powerstroke filter empty. I cranked it over a couple of times without starting it. Once the filter was full & the engine had oil pressure, I fired it up. Oil level is perfect now. I'll have to remember 11 quarts with Powerstroke filter. Normally I fill the filter with oil before screwing it on, but this time I was trying to get rid of 2 quarts of oil. It's all better now!
