, I still have my 1978 K-20 Chevrolet that I bought brand-new in 1978, now with over 400,000 miles on the original 4-bolt-main 350; it is sitting in the drive next to the rest of them, ready to go anywhere.
I ordered it in early February 78, it came in April 11, $5900 cash including tax and license.
Before the truck came in, I had three different individuals come to me and offer quite a profit to let them have my truck and me order another; the day it came in, one guy offered me ten hundred-dollar bills ($1000) to walk away from it and order me another.
This may seem un-believable, but at that time in history we were having some of the worst winters ever; orders for 4x4 trucks had a long waiting list, I got mine quite a bit quicker because I paid for it up front in cash.
And, probably the big clincher = my truck is one of the last GM produced that is classified "Heavy Duty Emissions", burns REGULAR and PREMIUM gasoline, and has no pollution system whatsoever.
Had I have waited a couple weeks to order it, I would have gotten 2-bolt mains, instead of 4-bolt, one of those crappy nylon timing chains, instead of a genuine double-row (motorcycle-type) "roller" timing chain,

UNLEADED GAS ONLY along with smog pump and all that weird stuff on the exhaust manifolds; most of you guys are too young to remember those good old days.
The original clutch was 12", and had 3 weighted fingers on the presure plate, instead of the multi-fingered arrangement we are used to today.
There are two specific types of the "three-fingered" clutches; Borg & Beck, which is most common on GM products; and, LONG or Ford-style, which was more prevalent on Ford products.
The multi-fingered clutch is a "diaphragm-style".
The three-fingered styles are much stronger, hold better, and last longer; BUT, the throwout-bearing will eventually EAT itself through the ends of the three fingers, eventually punching it's way plumb through and not releasing the clutch.
I, myself, have had this happen on a number of occassions, usually when maneuvering a big cattle-trailer in tight quarters; just when the situation gets the tightest, you push down the clutch-pedal to dis-engage the engine, and

The multi-fingered arangement of the diaphragm-style clutch spreads the pressure of the throw-out bearing over a much larger surface area, thus the clutch itself usually fails long before the bearing eats through the fingers.
