Noise abatement?

My truck is a Custom and has rubber on the floor with no backing, no hood mat, etc. I would like to bring the noise level down to a dull roar. Would love to hear what you have done and what worked. Larry

I did a layer of 50mil butyl sound deadening mat under the carpet, but I didn’t feel like it made enough difference so I added 200mil closed cell foam on top of it. There’s still a lot of noise coming through the firewall but the sound deadening made a big difference.

Also make sure you don’t have any rust holes in your floor pans like I did!

I have done it all kilmat thick carpet with rubber backing, the one thing that made the biggest difference was new door seals.

I bought rolls of "Peel & Seal" from Lowes. Very easy to install, adhesive back and foil on the other side. I removed the seats and carpet, then installed the peel & seal on everything including the back wall of the cab. Basically everywhere you can put it. The extended cab {black truck in my sig}, even put it on the ceiling and under both door panels. Underside of hood, I bought a kit from LMC.

Regarding door seals, make sure you buy really good ones. I bought cheaper ones on Amazon and 2 years later I still have to slam my door to close it

I downloaded the sound deadner showdown site before it was taken down. Went into pretty good explanation of using different materials. Butyl squares did not need full coverage, sound deadaning closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl were more effective. It be nice to have it accessible for everyone. Also be nice if I ever get around to pulling headliner, adding a few squares of butyl squares, 3m acoustic thinsulate and headliner material that is in the basement.

Do you think the head mats help?

I found an electronic noise canceling system that is used for machinery but have not found out the cost yet. Neat tech. Will keep looking and post if I find anything practical. Some of the new cars have this from the factory but just for wind noise.

Cutting the soup bowl out of the aircleaner lid really makes it noisy also. The diesel trucks usually came with extra sound deadner from the factory. Mine came with a very thick pad mounted under the hood. The mice love to chew those up.

A previous owner drilled a bunch of 1" or so diameter holes into the bottom side of the air filter housing (outside of the filter), and they really seem to have increased the noise level coming thru the firewall.

Have you ever run it without the air cleaner assembly just running it in the driveway? Boy that intake is noisy.

I just finished installing butyl rubber with a foil backing on my roof and it made a huge difference for "cabin noise". It installs very easily over bumps & lumps as long as you apply it with a roller.

Right now the firewall & floor only have bubble wrap foil underneath 14ga rubber mating, it's definitely getting the butyl rubber upgrade. I'll do a dual shifter boot as well, it's the only hole in the floor I have to worry about for noise imo.

My truck has 10k miles on it and spent most of its life inside so the seals are all good, exhaust is still original. Looking for an original hood mat, the ones I have seen don't look as substantial as the originals. I crashed my daily thanks to someone crossing the centerline but as soon as I get the F150 back together I am going to pull the seats and do the cab with mat. One question I have about the mat is does it cause corrosion under it. I live in Northern Michigan and this truck will see occasional use in the winter? [salt] rubber floors will be reinstalled.

Are those factory seats? My truck has army seats and I am looking for alternatives.

Tuck some moth balls under it.
