Yes, a swap can be done on the cheap if you are thrifty, I know I could easily do it for 2K with stuff I have available to me right now, and I am contemplating it for my crew, BUT, the big kicker here is Justin has a brand new engine, not a good running used one. Add in a rebuild on whatever you choose to swap in to make the end result comparable, and the low budget is long dead.

I don't think anybody has swapped in a cummins or dt360 for only 2-3k. It usually runs more along the lines of 5-7k.

I guess I am looking at it like this.

you could spend 3-4 k on a conversion....and still have room to grow. versus 3-4k and be maxxed out.

Rebuild on a DT360 is only about $1000.
Rebuilding the head would be additional, though.

I still think there's room to grow on Justin's setup, but honestly with either an IDI, Cummins or PSD or even DT, what is the streetable limit? A rebuild for a DT may be cheaper because of the wet sleeve design but I can't imagine spending much more than 1000 on parts for an IDI rebuild eve with machine work unless you had to sleeve some or all of the holes.

Just to sleeve 1 cylinder at one of the local machine shops costs over $150, so right there you're looking at way over $1k in a rebuild. If you do it right you will easily have over $1k into a rebuild. And by right, I mean boring or sleeving the block and installing new pistons, having the decks resurfaced and balancing the new rotating assembly. Easily over $1k there.

Doesnt a master kit alone for a 6.9 start at around 1000 bucks just for the parts? Then your talking how much in machine work?

Last time I checked, my local engine builder qouted me 3500$ to go through my long block. Granted that was him doing all the labor, but I highly doubt your even gonna touch a PROPER rebuild on an IDI for less than 2 grand...

Going through my 6.9 right now.

Machine work with new cam bearings and balancing the rotating assembly - $1100.
Master Victor Rienz gasket set and valley pan - $350
Pistons, rings, wirst pins - $550
Cylinder head dowels - $15
Main and Rod bearings - $315
Total - $2330

That's with me reusing the lifters, push rods, rockers, valves, and heads.

Not including the price of a new water pump, Moose pump and Moose injectors, "typ4" cam, and other odds and ends.

I don't know JD, but I'm shooting for the 1000HP (2200+ ft/lbs) mark on my DT466. Yup, I plan on driving it everyday. We'll see how that works out, but that's the plan.:D

you can do it. My 800+ hp Cummins was totally daily driveable. I know a guy w/ a Duramax pushing 1k hp and he drives it several days a week.

Big difference between 800-1000hp. ANd even bigger difference between a mechanical engine vs a electronic engine.

Not saying it is not possible, but......

this I'll give ya. I usually didn't keep mine on "kill" mode all the time. Although Jon and his Durasmack doesn't know anything other than "kill mode" only issue he has is the injectors are so freakin big that at our altitude and winters, it can be a dog and smoky to start when cold.
