new to site! questions! pyrometer?

i have a 1991 7.3 n/a 2wd dually with a 4 1/2 inch stack. i have been hearing about and or reading about pyrometers and would like to install one. can i? and what do i need to buy/ install to do this? step by step would be nice maybe. thank you in advance

First use SEARCH there's ton's of info on the site regarding pyros and so forth and where to install. You may even find a step by step.

As for purchase, gauges are a personal choice, ISSPRO are top shelf and can be had at Connestoga Diesel. Of course there are other brands SW, Auto Meter, and so on to name a couple.

You will need a Pyro of choice, and probe with enough lead to reach the gauge, a drill bit and tap to match the Pyro's probe size.

Most drill and tap a hole in the exhaust manifold in a location that's easy to reach close to the outlet...buwa ha ha ha ha...as if there is one! Then install the probe and feed wires carefully back and into the cabin area, don't forget a grommet to seal the hole and help stop chaffing of the wires. Then connect to gauge in your preferred location and done!

That's really it.

You are measuring the temp at the manifold. The farther away from the head the lower the temp could become. It shouldn't matter what is after the probe, just how close you are to the head. I haven't mounted one yet, but when I do it will most likely be either between #6 and #8 or just behind #8.

I did exhaust manifold gaskets earlier this year and was surprised how easy they were to get to if you remove the inner fender well (not that hard to do). So I might even remove the manifold if I have to to get to the spot I want. Otherwise, most I've read drill while the engine is running to keep the shavings blowing away from the exhaust port.

Mine is located between 6 and 8. The rear of the drivers side manifold.

On a non turbo engine its not necessary to run the engine when drilling because nothing falling into the manifold will hurt the turbo thats not there. But running whiles drilling is an ok idea too. Please understand how to drill cast iron and tap the pipe threads in it. Go too deep with the tap and the fitting will never seal on the taper cut threads. Al pipe threads are a taper cut. Thats how they seal and no leaks happen.
